After a seven-season absence, the Silver & Black are close to clinching their first playoff berth since 1993.
Oakland needs only to tie the New York Jets on Sunday to secure their first postseason trip since Art Shell's fifth season as head coach.
The Raiders were still in Los Angeles for their last playoff appearance, and they defeated the Broncos 42-24 on Jan. 1, 1994, at the Los Angeles Coliseum. Oakland went on the road the following week and lost to the eventual AFC champion Buffalo Bills 29-23 on Jan. 15.
The battle for home-field advantage in the AFC is especially tight, with six teams bunched within a game of each other for the top record. For all the playoff success the Raiders have had in their history, not much of it has come on the road.
The Raiders are 15-4 at home in the playoffs, 3-10 on the road and 3-1 in neutral sites -- a 33-14 loss to the Packers in Super Bowl II in Miami; a 32-14 win against the Vikings in Super Bowl XI in Pasadena, Calif.; a 27-10 win against the Eagles in Super Bowl XV in New Orleans; and a 38-9 win against the Redskins in Super Bowl XVIII in Tampa, Fla.
Home or neutral, the Raiders look like a good bet. But if they have to go on the road in the playoffs, a trip to Tampa becomes much less likely. Oakland's opponents in the final three weeks have a combined record of 20-19, making a run at home-field advantage another test that they will have to pass if they hope to play in Super Bowl XXXV.
