The Chiefs' defense allows only 222 yards a game this season AP

For every predictable part of the fourth week of the NFL season -- Steve Young and Jerry Rice connecting like old days, Brett Favre tossing five touchdowns, Ryan Leaf throwing interceptions -- there were surprises as well.

Priest Holmes, making his first NFL start, rushed for 173 yards against a porous Bengals defense. The Cardinals won their second straight game and the Saints stayed undefeated. Chicago's Erik Kramer threw four touchdowns and lost, with the Bears leading at halftime for the fourth straight time.

While rookie quarterbacks Leaf and Peyton Manning are getting headlines as they struggle, other rookies are shining, like Jacksonville's Fred Taylor, Green Bay's Vonnie Holliday and Minnesota's Randy Moss.

Four AFC teams -- Miami, New York, New England and Buffalo -- had the week off.

Week 4 NFL Capsules
TeamsKey StatKey to VictoryMVP
Cardinals 20 (2-2)
Rams 17 (1-3)
Rams rookie tailback Robert Holcombe, seeing his first NFL action, rushed for two touchdowns and 84 yards. An offsides penalty on third down and a 43-yard pass interference penalty helped set up the Cards' winning field goal. The Cardinals defense racked up four sacks of Rams QB Tony Banks, including two from rookie Andre Wadsworth.
Stats and rec ap
Broncos 38 (4-0)
Redskins 16 (0-4)
The Broncos have scored touchdowns in their last eight consecutive quarters in their past two victories. The Denver offensive line did not allow any sacks against the Redskins' high-paid, much-heralded pass rush. Terrell Davis rushed for 119 yards to give him an NFL-best 489 in four games, nearly on pace for 2,000.
Stats and re cap
Packers 37 (4-0)
Panthers 30 (0-3)
Brett Favre now has nine career games with three or more interceptions and three with five touchdowns. Green Bay's old-new tandem of Reggie White and rookie Vonnie Holiday sacked Carolina's Kerry Collins four times. Favre threw for 388 yards -- his third-best total as a pro -- while completing 60 percent of his passes.
Stats and r ecap
Jaguars 27 (4-0)
Oilers 22 (1-3)
The Jaguars, at 27-24, now have a better mark than the Carolina Panthers, who are 26-24 since 1995. The Jaguars defensive line, missing several key players with injuries, held Eddie George to 25 yards on 14 carries. Jaguars rookie RB Fred Taylor had one touchdown and 116 yards for his second straight 100-yard game.
Stats and recap
Chiefs 24 (3-1)
Eagles 21 (0-4)
Eagles tailback Duce Staley scored three touchdowns, after the Eagles managed 15 points in their first three games. The game's only turnover set up what would be the winning touchdown for Kansas City in the fourth quarter. Donnell Bennett came through for the Chiefs with 87 yards and three touchdowns, including two in the fourth quarter.
Scores and recap
Saints 19 (3-0)
Colts 13(OT) (0-4)
Peyton Manning's 11 interceptions in four games put him on pace to challenge George Blanda's NFL record of 42. Danny Wuerffel threw only one interception to go with two touchdowns, including the game-winner in overtime. Saints tailback Lamar Smith rushed for 157 yards and is on pace to be the team's first 1,000-yard rusher since 1989.
Stats and recap
Raiders 13 (2-2)
Cowboys 12 (2-2)
Charles Woodson got his first NFL interception, putting him well behind Peyton Manning (11) and Ryan Leaf (8). Dallas committed three turnovers, and while the Raiders didn't convert them into any points, they had no turnovers. Oakland RB Napoleon Kaufman rushed for 115 yards, ranking him second in the AFC with 360 yards on the season.
St ats and re cap
Steelers 13 (3-1)
Seahawks 10 (3-1)
Steelers have won six of their last seven meetings with AFC West teams. Seattle fullback Mack Strong managed to have two fumbles in his three carries, killing two Seahawk drives. Steelers RB Jerome Bettis got 28 carries and responded with 138 yards to offset a poor day by Kordell Stewart.
Stats and recap
49ers 31 (3-0)
Falcons 20 (2-1)
Steve Young has thrown for 1,053 yards in three games, putting him on pace to break Dan Marino's record of 5,084. Young and Rice hooked up for two more touchdowns, and Rice's 162 yards is his best total since 1995. Jerry Rice has 28 touchdowns against the Falcons, more than any player against any team in NFL history.
Scores and recap
Vikings 31 (4-0)
Bears 28 (0-4)
Vikings receiver Jake Reed has scored a TD in just one of his last 15 games -- Carter has 12 in the same span. Vikings rookie Randy Moss picked up his fourth touchdown in as many games to give Minnesota a 10-point lead late. Randall Cunningham has no interceptions and six touchdown passes for Minnesota this season.
Stats and re cap
Giants 34 (2-2)
Chargers 16 (2-2)
Ryan Leaf's eight interceptions put him on pace to match the Chargers record of 32 thrown by John Hadl in 1968. Giants, who led NFL with plus-25 takeaway ratio last year, came up with four interceptions of Leaf passes. Giants tailback Gary Brown gave New York a 7-0 lead with a 4-yard touchdown and finished with 66 yards.
Stats and recap
Ravens 31 (2-2)
Bengals 24 (1-3)
Bengals rookies Takeo Spikes, Artrell Hawkins and Brian Simmons combined for 19 tackles and two sacks. Ravens WR Jermaine Lewis had two more big plays, with an 87-yard punt return and 73-yard catch, both for touchdowns. Ravens tailback Priest Holmes rushed for 173 yards in his first NFL start, with two first-quarter touchdown runs.
Stats and recap
Bucs (1-2)
at Lions (0-3)
2 -- Number of touchdowns Detroit RB Barry Sanders needs for 100 in career. Only five others have done that. Bullish Bucs back Mike Alstott, coming off first 100-yard game, vs. Detroit front line. If you're not watching Sanders -- held to 12 yards in the second half last week -- you'll miss something.
