Terrell Davis, who did not play after halftime, had two TDs and 168 yards in the first half AP

Week 5 of the NFL season had your incomprehensible upsets, your squeakers and your laughers.

The upset: The juggernaut San Francisco 49ers fell to the previously winless Buffalo Bills. The squeaker: Drew Bledoe cooly led the New England Patriots to a late drive to down the previously unbeaten New Orleans Saints. And the laugher: The Denver Broncos -- who may never lose -- rolled over the yet-to-win Philadelphia Eagles 41-16.

Three teams -- the Jacksonville Jaguars (who had the week off), the winner of Monday night's Green Bay Packers-Minnesota Vikings game and the Broncos -- will be undefeated heading into Week 6. And the Washington Redskins, Carolina Panthers and Philadelphia Eagles still are looking for their first win.

Week 5 NFL Recap
Teams Key Stat Key to Win MVP
Colts 17, Chargers 12
Stats and recap
12-for-23. Peyton Manning and Ryan Leaf had real similar numbers -- both had a TD, too -- in the rookie showdown. Colts kicker Mike Vanderjagt hit field goals of 48, 51 and 40 yards to lead the Colts to their first win of the season and their first under Jim Mora. Turnovers accounted for 14 of the Colts' points as linebacker Elijah Alexander had an interception and recovered a fumble.
Patriots 30, Saints 27
Stats and recap
4-for-4, 62 yards. Drew Bledsoe's line in the game-winning drive that culminated with a Adam Vinatieri field goal with three seconds left. A Bledsoe to Vincent Brown pass on the final drive went for 27 yards to the saints' 18 and set up Vinatieri's winner. Bledsoe, who overcame three interceptions -- his first picks of the year -- to cooly hand the Saints their first loss of the season.
Bears 31,
Lions 27
Stats and recap
14-for-28. Incredibly, the line of Detroit running back extraordinaire Barry Sanders. An option pass from Chicago running back Edgar Bennett to Chris Penn went for a TD and started a 21-point fourth-quarter comeback. Penn filled in for injured Curtis Conway and had six catches for a career-high 106 yards with a TD.
Bills 26,
49ers 21
Stats and recap
22 -- Penalties by the 49ers, tying an NFL record. The penalties went for 178 yards, a team record. The 49ers came back with three touchdowns in the fourth quarter, but four turnovers was too much to overcome. Rob Johnson was a workmanlike 19-of-26 for 254 yards and a TD. He was not intercepted.
Cowboys 31, Redskins 10
Stats and recap
20 -- The number of years it has been since Dallas has had two backs go over 100 yards rushing in the same game. Chris Warren and Emmitt Smith churned over the hapless Redskins for 104 and 120 yards, respectively. He ain't sexy, but he gets it done: Dallas QB Jason Garrett, 14-for-17, 1 TD, 0 INT and 169 yards.
Falcons 51, Panthers 23
Stats and recap
25 -- How many years it has been since the Falcons last scored this many points. Atlanta ripped off three touchdown in a span of less than a minute in the third quarter to cap the win. Rookie Tim Dwight started the Falcons' fun by returning the opening kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown.
Jets 20,
Dolphins 9
Stats and recap
34 -- Net yards rushing for the previously unbeaten Dolphins, who had been averaging 121 a game. Once the Jets stuffed the Dolphins' run game, they teed off on a rusty Dan Marino, holding him to 121 yards passing. Jets running back Curtis Martin pounded for 108 yards and a touchdown on 36 carries.
Raiders 23, Cardinals 20
Stats and recap
6 -- The number of seconds the Cardinals needed on their final drive. They had only five remaining. Rookie cornerback Charles Woodson picked off a pass and scored his first NFL TD to put Oakland ahead for good. Don Hollas came in for injured Jeff George, ran for a TD and led the Raiders to all their scores.
Broncos 41, Eagles 16
Stats and recap
1972 -- The last time the Eagles started the year 0-5. They finished that season 2-11-1. Terrell Davis had two TDs and 168 yards in the first half. He did not play after halftime. Bubby Brister, filling in for John Elway, threw for four touchdown passes, matching his career high.
Bucs 20,
Giants 3
Stats and recap
8:18 -- The time the Bucs used in a killer fourth-quarter drive that ended in a field goal, stifling a Giants' comeback. The Bucs' defense held the Giants to 134 yards and only eight first downs. Tampa Bay's Mike Alstott had 18 carries for 67 yards and a late game-capping touchdown.
Chiefs 17, Seahawks 6
Stats and recap
14-of-15 -- The streak the Chiefs are on against the Seahawks. After Seattle had closed to 10-6 in the third, K.C.'s Rich Gannon connected with Andre Rison for an 80-yard TD. In a soggy night at Arrowhead, Chiefs corner James Hasty recovered a fumble and had one interception.
Vikings 37, Packers 24

Stats and recap
545 -- Yards rolled up by the Vikings' offense against the NFL's top-ranked defense. Randall Cunningham picked apart the Green Bay defense for three second-quarter TD passes. Cunningham finished the game with 442 yards through the air and four TDs.
