Brett Favre is on pace to become first NFL player with five seasons of 30 or more TD passes Harry How/Allsport

A full seven weeks remain in the '98 schedule, but the playoff slots seem to be going fast. The focus this early on isn't on the 12 teams that look to be in (and realize, please, that they're barely halfway home) -- it's those 18 who will be watching the rest from home in January.

And since this is an election week, let's look at who's projecting as winners, even though 10 of 17 precincts are really in.

This, from the ever-popular If The Season Ended Today Department: as it stands right now, Buffalo, New England, Seattle and Pittsburgh are fighting for the last AFC wild card spot. That doesn't count Kansas City and Tennessee, who are another game out of the picture.

In the NFC, the race is much tighter. If you presume that the Falcons, 49ers, Vikings, Packers and Cowboys are in, then there only three teams within a game of the last spot -- Tampa Bay, Arizona and, on the outside, New Orleans.

It doesn't take "Dewey beats Truman" to show that it's way too early to tell. After all, Newt Gingrich was sitting pretty a few weeks ago, wasn't he? Will the NFL's Jesse Ventura please step forward?
