Bad Batch: The Lions and Charlie Batch handed the under-achieving Bucs their seventh loss of the season AP

While they're mathematically still alive, it might be time to pull the life support on two surefire preseason playoff teams, Kansas City and Tampa Bay. Both are now 4-7 after tough losses to San Diego and Detroit, respectively, and find themselves needing close to a perfect finish to get back in the wild-card hunt.

Considering that last year marked only the second time a wild-card team won the Super Bowl, you'd think this year has real potential for the same, with teams like the 49ers, Steelers and Packers looking at possible wild cards. Still, of the seven teams in best position for a wild card right now, all have at least three road losses and none are above .500 on the road.

There's no real newsflash here, but the teams looking at the postseason right now are the teams taking care of wins at home. Here's that silly hypothetical phrase again -- if the season ended this week -- of the 12 playoff teams, only one team (Arizona, the NFC's last wild card) would have more than one loss at home.

Makes that home-field advantage seem all the more important ...

Stats and recap
Giants 20 (4-7)
Eagles 0 (2-9)
The Eagles have scored 92 points this season, matching the season total for Oilers kicker Al Del Greco. Giants DB Phillippi Sparks picked off two Bobby Hoying passes to help seal the shutout for New York.
Stats and recap
Falcons 20 (9-2)
Bears 12 (3-8)
Atlanta, leading the NFL in time of possession, held the ball for 35:45 and had 15 more plays than Chicago. Atlanta scored the final 17 points, marking the fourth second-half lead blown by the Bears in '98. Falcons QB Chris Chandler threw two second-half touchdowns, making it 20 straight games with a TD pass.
Stats and recap
Steelers 30 (7-4)

Stats and recap
Bills 34 (7-4)
Colts 11 (2-9)
Doug Flutie has 13 touchdown passes this year, one less than NFL career total before this season. Colts' Peyton Manning's two picks turned into 10 Buffalo points, while Flutie threw no interceptions. Stats and recap
Lions 28 (4-7)
Tampa Bay 25 (4-7)
After 54 receiving yards all season, Bucs rookie Jacquez Green had 98 on Sunday, including a 44-yard TD. The Bucs had the game's only two turnovers, one of which Detroit converted for its final touchdown. Lions rookie QB Charlie Batch played mistake-free football, throwing for two first-half touchdowns.

Redskins 42 (2-9)
The two teams combined for 56 first downs, 87 points and 867 yards, averaging 6.19 yards per play. Stats and recap
Panthers 24 (2-9)
Rams 20 (3-8)
Rams long snapper Jeff Robinson, who has 7.5 sacks as a defensive tackle, caught a 4-yard TD pass. Rams QB Steve Bono, having attempted 11 passes since '96 before Sunday, couldn't close a last-minute drive. Panthers QB Steve Beuerlein hit 21 of 26 passes (80 percent) to go above 65 percent for the season.
Stats and recap
Chargers 38 (5-6)
Chiefs 37 (4-7)
K.C. has lost six games or less in six different seasons in '90s, and has lost six straight in '98. Chiefs were hit with 11 penalties, including two pass interference calls on the Chargers' last drive. Chargers QB Craig Whelihan, 0-7 as a starter last year, led San Diego to its second straight win.
Stats and recap
Broncos 40 (11-0)
Raiders 14 (7-4)
Forced to pass early, Oakland rushed just 19 times for 49 yards, including 8 from Napoleon Kaufman. Broncos continued their fourth-quarter dominance, outscoring the Raiders 23-0 to put the game away. John Elway completed 68 percent of his passes and tossed three TD passes in his first game back.
Stats and recap
Jets 24 (7-4)
Oilers 3 (6-5)
Jets' Curtis Martin has 10 games with 20 or more carries, only two better than Sunday's 123 yards. Oilers offense couldn't score, converted only two third downs and gained only 223 total yards. Jets' Keyshawn Johnson improved his AFC-leading TD reception total to eight with the go-ahead score.
Stats and recap
Ravens 20 (4-7)
Bengals 13 (2-9)
Ravens RB Priest Holmes has 400 yards in two games against Cincy and 290 in his other nine games in '98. Ravens outrushed the Bengals 247-58, averaging 6.0 yards per carry against the NFL's worst run defense. Holmes helped the Ravens gain 13 first downs running, gaining nearly as many yards as in his past five games.
Stats and recap
49ers 31 (8-3)
Saints 20 (5-6)
The Niners won their 14th straight regular-season game at home. The Niners broke open a close game with a 17-point third quarter behind two Steve Young TD passes, including an 81-yard bomb to Garrison Hearst. Young overcame three first-quarter turnovers to finish with 290 yards and 4 TDs.
Stats, Recap

Dolphins 23 (7-4)
The two teams combined for 51 yards on the ground - 26 for New England, 25 for Miami. New England's Shawn Jefferson, the goat in last week's loss, made two clutch catches - on a fourth-and-seven play and the winning TD.
