Vintage John Elway: The Broncos QB put his team on his back, throwing for 400 yards for the first time since 1985 Vincent Laforet/Allsport

For the second straight year, wild cards might not be so wild. With Sunday's losses from the Raiders and Steelers, the AFC's three wild-card spots would all go to AFC East teams right now, marking the third time since the NFL added a third wild card to each conference in 1990 that one division would send four teams into the playoffs.

The NFC Central has done that twice, last year and in 1994, and the AFC East could do the same with the Dolphins and Jets at 9-4 and the Bills and Patriots at 8-5. All four won on Sunday, and what makes the road to the postseason even easier is that there's only three total division games left between the four.

If the current playoff setup plays out, the AFC East and NFC Central will be tied for the most wild-card berths in the 1990s -- at 12 each. Both divisions are hot, too -- the NFC Central has taken 10 of the last 15 NFC wild-card spots, while a sweep this year would give the AFC East eight of the AFC's last 12.

The NFC, at least, is keeping the wild cards interesting, with one from each division as it stands right now. The Cards, at 6-7, are tied with the Saints, and potentially the Bucs, but they have the tiebreaker edge on both.

Week 14 NFL Capsules
Teams Key Stat Key to Victory MVP
Eagles 17 (3-10)
Rams 14 (3-10)
After zero touchdowns in their first 11 games, Eagles receivers now have four in the past two games. Poor clock management by the Rams allowed time to expire with the team in range for a potential game-tying FG. Eagles QB Koy Detmer passed for 2 TDs for the second time in as many games, leading the Eagles to victory.
Stats and recap
Saints 22 (6-7)
Cowboys 3 (8-5)
Cowboys rushed for a franchise-low 8 yards, including 6 on Emmitt Smith's 15 carries. Dallas, after scoring 101 points in last three, managed just three, lowest total since 1991. QB Kerry Collins threw for two touchdowns, keeping Saints' slim playoff hopes alive at 6-7.
Stats and recap
Bills 33 (8-5)
Bengals 20 (2-11)
Bills' Steve Christie has attempted an NFL-high 35 field goals, converting on 28 of them. Despite a season-high three interceptions, Doug Flutie made enough plays to beat the Bears easily. Bills receiver Eric Moulds had as many touchdowns Sunday as he did in his first two NFL seasons.
Stats and recap
Jaguars 37 (10-3)
Lions 22 (5-8)
Fred Taylor has 12 rushing TDs, on pace for third-most ever, behind Ickey Woods (15) and Eric Dickerson (18). Jags QB Jamie Martin filled in well for Mark Brunell, throwing 2 TDs and zero interceptions. Taylor's 183 yards set another Jaguars rushing record and pushed him over 1,000 for the season.
Stats and recap
Jets 32 (9-4)
Seahawks 31 (6-7)
Jets passed for more first downs (21) and yards (418) than the Seahawks offense totaled (13, 377). Officials thought Vinny Testaverde got in the end zone on 4th down in the 4th quarter for the winning TD. Testaverde tied a team mark with 42 completions, set the Jets record with 63 attempts and accounted for 3 TDs.
Stats and recap
Patriots 23 (8-5)
Steelers 9 (7-6)
Kordell Stewart threw a season-high 45 passes but went without a TD for the first time in 2 months. Despite 2.1 yards/carry, Patriots held ball for 38:24, thanks in part to 13 first downs gained by passing. In three games since a month out with injury, Terry Glenn has 24 catches for 363 yards and one TD.
Stats and recap
Falcons 28 (11-2)
Colts 21 (2-11)
Atlanta's Jamal Anderson averaged 6.1 yards/carry, his third-best game average this season. For the 10th time this season, Colts QB Peyton Manning threw more than one interception in a game. Falcons QB Chris Chandler tied the game on the last play of the first half and won it with a TD pass.
Stats and recap
Redskins 24 (4-9)
Chargers 20 (5-8)
Since dropping their first nine, the Redskins have won four of their last six, by combined 46 points. Washington's red zone defense forced the Chargers to go for field goals of 32, 27, 25 and 20 yards. 'Skins QB Trent Green continued to excel, throwing 2 more TDs to give him 19 for the season.
WStats and recap
49ers 34 (10-3)
Panthers 31 (2-11)
Jerry Rice led the 49ers with five catches but no TDs, while J.J. Stokes had two and Terrell Owens one. Carolina's costly fumble in overtime spoiled a comeback from a 21-point deficit in regulation. 49ers' Garrison Hearst had his third 70-yard TD run this year, after no run longer than 57 yards before '98.
Stats and recap
Giants 23 (5-8)
Cardinals 19 (6-7)
At 5-8, the Giants are one game out of the wild-card hunt, with Denver, K.C. and Philly on the schedule. There was no comeback this time for Arizona, whose only second-half points came on a giveaway safety. Giants' Gary Brown and Charles Way rushed 39 times for 184 of the team's season-high 200 yards.
Stats and recap
Dolphins 27 (9-4)
Raiders 17 (7-6)
Dan Marino matched his season high by completing two-thirds of his passes, with zero intercepions. Dolphins defense scored two touchdowns, had six interceptions and sacked Oakland QBs eight times. Miami LB Robert Jones had 1.5 sacks and two interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown.
Stats and recap
Broncos 35 (13-0)
Chiefs 31 (5-8)
Terrell Davis has 20 rushing touchdowns, needing six in three games to break Emmitt Smith's NFL record. Denver had John Elway, who rallied the Broncos to the last 14 points in the final 6:48. Elway had his first 400-yard game since 1985, only the second of his career, on just 32 passes.
Stats and recap
Oilers 16 (7-6)
Ravens 14 (5-8)
The Ravens had 48 offensive plays compared to Tennessee's 77, going 2-for-11 on third downs. Oilers' Steve Jackson had his first interception of the season to end the Ravens' last drive. Al Del Greco kicked three field goals, giving him an NFL-best 30 in 33 attempts this season.
Stats and recap
Vikings 48 (12-1)
Bears 22 (3-10)
The Bears were 0-for-13 on third down conversions. With Chris Carter sidelined with a calf injury, Vikings WR Randy Moss caught three touchdowns for the second consecutive game. Vikings' Randell Cunningham completed 21 of 31 passes for 349 yards including four touchdowns.
Stats and Recap
Bucs 24 (6-7)
Packers 22 (8-5)
Buccaneers defense recorded eight sacks of Packers QB Brett Favre. The Packers are 0-3 on Monday night this season. The Buccaneers defense forced and recovered two fumbles from the Packers offense ... the last of which helped set up Trent Dilfer's six-yard, game-winning touchdown run in the fourth. Buccaneers QB Dilfer accounted for all three of Tampa Bay's touchdowns -- a 64-yard catch and run by Jacquez Green, a 62-yard catch-and-run by Bert Emanuel, and his 6-yard run in the fourth turned out to be the game-winner.
