Getting it done: Testaverde is 10-1 as a starter this season, including a 34-12 win over the Bills in Week 10 AP

So much for the same teams winning every year. The Falcons, Cowboys and Jaguars clinched division titles this week, making it official: for only the second time since the NFL-AFL merger in 1970, no division winner repeated the next season. Six new division champs.

The only other time it happened was in 1992. Even more impressively, it looks like three of last year's division champs -- the Chiefs, Steelers and Giants -- won't even make the playoffs. Four 1991 division champs made the '92 playoffs as wild cards.

And while this year's playoff lineup is certainly different from last year, nine of the '97 postseason dozen are returning to this year's playoffs. With the Dolphins winning Monday night, they earn the final playoff spot in the AFC leaving three teams -- the Cards, Bucs and Giants -- to battle for the final berth in the NFC.

So next week will have a greater impact on the NFL Draft than it will on the postseason -- both 2-12 teams won this week, putting four teams at 3-12 in position for a top-five pick. The Panthers (who sent their pick to Washington) and the Colts play each other Sunday.

Week 16 NFL Capsules
Teams Key Stat Key to Victory MVP
Jets 17 (11-4)
Bills 10 (9-6)
The Jets and Falcons are the only NFL teams with 3 players over 1,000 yards rushing or receiving. Dedric Ward, the Jets' unsung No. 3 receiver, caught a 71-yard TD, his third of this season. Jets QB Vinny Testaverde had two more TD passes, giving him 25 this year with only six INTs.
Stats and recap
Redskins 20 (6-9)
Buccaneers 16 (7-8)
Redskins are only the second NFL team ('78 Falcons) to go from 0-7 to six wins in the same season. Bucs had three drives start inside the Redskins' 43-yard line and result in only field goals. QB Trent Green led the 'Skins to 17 fourth-quarter points and threw the game-winning TD.
Bears 24 (4-11)
Ravens 3 (5-10) at
Ravens were outrushed 189-22 and rushed for only two first downs on just 16 total carries. Chicago's Steve Stenstrom played mistake-free football, throwing for 203 yards and a touchdown. Tailback James Allen rushed for 163 yards, becoming the first Bear this year to rush for 100 yards.
Stats and recap
Packers 30 (10-5)
Oilers 22 (8-7)
Green Bay's Brett Favre became the first player ever to throw for 30 TDs in five seasons. Favre had his first three-touchdown game in seven weeks, only his third of the season. Packers WR Antonio Freeman had three long TD catches, tying him for 2nd in the NFL with 13.
Stats and recap
Patriots 24 (9-6)
49ers 21 (11-4)
Robert Edwards became the 3rd Patriots rookie to rush for 1,000 yards (John Stephens, Curtis Martin). Scott Zolak led the Pats into field goal range in 1:45 to set up the game-winner with 3 seconds left. Zolak filled in admirably for Drew Bledsoe, tossing two TDs and helping clinch a playoff berth.
Stats and recap
Panthers 20 (3-12)
Rams 13 (4-11)
Muhsin Muhammad set a Panthers record with 68 receptions in '98, breaking Mark Carrier's mark. Tight end Luther Broughton, who had 54 yards all year, caught a 68-yard, game-winning TD pass. Carolina QB Steve Beuerlein threw two TDs and went without an INT for the first time in six weeks.
Stats and recap
Bengals 25 (3-12)
Steelers 24 (7-8)
Teams combined for three defensive touchdowns in an 11-minute span, offenses managed just two. Bengals had two different players with more receiving yards than the Steelers managed (107). QB Jeff Blake threw for 367 yards and set up the final drive for Doug Pelfrey's fourth field goal.
Stats and recap
Giants 28 (7-8)
Chiefs 7 (6-9)
N.Y.'s Gary Brown had his fifth 100-yard game and needs 49 yards next week to reach 1,000. Giants had no turnovers in building 28-0 lead to keep slim playoff hopes alive a little longer. Percy Ellsworth had two of the Giants' four interceptions, returning one for a touchdown.
Stats and recap
Raiders 17 (8-7)
Chargers 10 (5-10)
Teams combined for six turnovers, three missed field goals and went five-for-25 on third downs. Raiders scored 14 second-quarter points on touchdown passes by 39-year-old QB Wade Wilson. Oakland WR James Jett caught a TD and picked up 106 receiving yards, his second-best total of '98.
Stats and recap
Seahawks 27 (8-7)
Colts 23 (3-12)
Despite converting only one third down, the Colts were within five yards of upsetting Seattle. Without a running game, Colts threw four incompletions after first-and-goal late in the fourth. Seattle RB Ricky Watters rushed for a season-high 178 yards and started a run of 17 unanswered points.
Stats and recap
Cardinals 19 (8-7)
Saints 17 (6-9)
Saints' Aaron Craver exploded for 45 rushing yards, team's best single-game total in eight weeks. Cards had Jake Plummer, who drove 73 yards in the final 1:21 to set up the game-winning field goal. Plummer threw for 394 yards to keep his team one win away from its first playoff berth since '82.
Stats and recap
Cowboys 13 (9-6)
Eagles 9 (3-12)
Dallas converted two third downs, Philly one; Eagles outgained Cowboys 356-248 and lost. Cowboys scored game's only touchdown, fittingly on a fake field goal, providing margin of victory. Cowboys' Emmitt Smith rushed for 110 yards after four games without reaching the 100-yard mark.
Stats and recap
Falcons 24 (13-2)
Lions 17 (5-10)
Jamal Anderson has 392 carries for the Falcons; no other Atlanta tailback has more than 14 this season. Falcons defense buckled down and gave up 3 points in second half; offense scored 14 in fourth. Anderson had his 7th 100-yard game in 8 weeks and tied a team record with his 13th rushing TD.
Stats and recap
Vikings 50 (14-1)
Jaguars 10 (10-5)
Vikings defense held Jacksonville's offense to 69 yards passing. Minnesota turned four Jacksonville turnovers into 26 points. Vikings QB Randall Cunningham completed 16-of-30 passes for 210 yards and three touchdowns.
Stats and Recap
Dolphins 31 (10-5)
Broncos 21 (13-2)
Dolphins defense held Broncos running back Terrell Davis to 29 yards on 16 carries. Dolphins receiver Lamar Thomas caught six passes for 136 yards and three touchdowns (9, 56 and 17 yards). Dolphins QB Dan Marino completed 23-of-38 for 355 yards and four touchdowns.
