Kent Graham's two touchdown passes weren't enough to get the Giants into the playoffs AP

For all those teams facing the difficult challenge of winning a playoff game on the road, Week 17 offered a glimmer of hope.

Seven of the 14 games this weekend were won by the road team, a solid showing in a season in which home teams are 150-89 -- winning 62.8 percent of the time.

More astoundingly, four NFL teams went undefeated at home in 1998 -- the Broncos, Falcons, 49ers and Vikings. Four teams did that last season, and three in 1996. That's 11 in three years -- in the previous 17 seasons since the NFL went to a 16-game schedule, just 14 teams did it, with no more than two in any one year.

Of the 12 playoff teams, only one (Arizona) has more than two home losses this year, and the Cardinals clinched the last playoff spot with a home win. Conversely, only one team out of the playoffs (Tennessee) had a winning road record. Only seven NFL teams had losing records at home. Only five had winning records on the road. The news flash here as that home teams are supposed to win.

Just the same, the Broncos won four games on the road last year to win the Super Bowl. Could that happen again? Of the four teams on the road next week in the opening round of the playoffs, none is above .500 on the road. Then again, last year, the Broncos were just 4-4 on the road in the regular season.

And lastly, for those of you keeping score, Week 17 games averaged 43.1 points per game Sunday, meaning Monday's Jaguars-Steelers game needs a combined 131 points for 1998 to be the highest-scoring season in NFL history. The NFL single-game record is 113 points. Maybe the second-highest-scoring season in NFL history is enough.
