Season starts with bang as comebacks abound

Brett Favre and the Packers' comeback win was Green Bay's 31st victory in its last 32 games at Lambeau Field. AP

By Jon A. Dolezar, CNN/SI

The 80th NFL season got off to a rousing start at 1:04 p.m. EDT with a touchdown scored on the first play of the first game of the new season. Saints cornerback Tyrone Drakeford popped the cork on the 1999 regular season by taking a fumbled kickoff return by Michael Bates back 20 yards for a touchdown to give the Saints a quick 7-0 lead.

The impressive first play just set the tone for what was an amazing opening day in the NFL.

The early games got off to an unfortunate start when the Jets lost Vinny Testaverde for the season to a ruptured achilles tendon, and then went out and blew the game to the Patriots as well. The Cowboys and Cardinals won their games on the last play of the game, and the Packers and Titans both won by scoring the go-ahead points with less than 11 seconds to play in their games. Buffalo wasn't quite so lucky to see a fantastic finish, getting pushed to the Edge by the Colts and their rookie running back. Kurt Warner was still playing indoors, but the field is a bit longer now than he is used to, and he was probably wondering what happened to those nets attached to the goalposts. Dick Jauron proved that the West Coast of Lake Michigan is a suitable place to run the West Coast offense.

The late games saw what could be the team of the next decade make the team of the '80's look old and slow. Minnesota got a measure of revenge for losing to the Falcons in the NFC Championship game last year, but it wasn't a good day to be a kicker named Anderson in the Georgia Dome today. Detroit discovered that there may in fact be life without Barry Sanders in the backfield. Trent Dilfer spent the second half today practicing for what may be his new career as the clipboard holder for Eric Zeier's offense.

The Sunday evening affair by the lake in Cleveland certainly turned out differently than Browns fans had been hoping for in the four years since football was last played in Cleveland

Finally, to close out the wonderful opening weekend of games, the two-time defending champs took it on the chin in their season-opener on Monday night, falling 38-21 to a Dolphins team that looks poised to make a Super Bowl run in the AFC.
