CNNSI.com's Jon A. Dolezar reviews the Week 4 games.
| Week Four |
 |
Chicago 31 |
at Atlanta |
 |
Atlanta 3 |
Recap
Game Summary
|
| Key Stat |
7 -- Sacks by the Bears against Falcons quarterback Chris Chandler and Michael Vick.
|
| Player of the Game |
Marcus Robinson, WR, Chicago: Finally had his breakout game of the season, with nine catches for 114 yards and one touchdown.
|
| CNNSI.com's Breakdown |
The Bears' defense did their best impression of the Buddy Ryan -era Monsters of the Midway. Chicago knocked Chandler out with yet another concussion, but not before picking off three of the 12 passes he threw. Five turnovers by Atlanta committed doomed its chances. Emerging superstar linebacker Brian Urlacher had five tackles, one sack, an interception and a 90-yard fumble return for a touchdown that broke the game wide open.

 |
San Diego 16 |
Recap
Game Summary
|
| Key Stat |
3.8 -- Yards per passing attempt for Doug Flutie, who completed only 45.9 percent of his passes.
|
| Player of the Game |
Tim Couch, QB, Cleveland: His numbers weren't spectacular (14 of 27 for 203 yards and one touchdown), but he led the Browns on an eight-play, 50-yard drive for the game-winning score with 3:52 to play.
|
| CNNSI.com's Breakdown |
The Chargers' dream of a 4-0 start was dashed by a Browns team that has the look of a possible Cinderalla team itself. San Diego held Cleveland to only 3.1 yards per carry, with rookie James Jackson getting held to 68 yards on 26 carries. But the Browns' passing game came alive in the fourth quarter, with Couch going 3 of 5 for 46 yards on the game-winning drive.

Recap
Game Summary
|
| Key Stat |
36:21 -- Time of possession for the Dolphins, who outrushed the Patriots 209-80.
|
| Player of the Game |
Lamar Smith, RB, Miami: After plodding along with a 3.0 average through the first three games, Smith broke out with 29 carries for 144 yards and one touchdown for an impressive 5.0 yards per carry.
|
| CNNSI.com's Breakdown |
Maybe last week was an aberration for both teams. The Dolphins bounced back from their drubbing by the Rams, while the Patriots didn't look anything like the team that upset the Colts. Tom Brady struggled in his second career start, completing only 12 of 24 for 86 yards. Dolphins defensive end Daryl Gardener had seven tackles and two sacks, while his opposite rush end Jason Taylor had three tackles, one sack and two fumble recoveries, including one for a 1-yard touchdown return.

New York 23 |

 |
Washington 9 |
Recap
Game Summary
|
| Key Stat |
1-13 -- Redskins' third-down conversion rate (7.7 percent), compared to a 8-for-17 rate (47.0 percent) for the Giants.
|
| Player of the Game |
Jason Sehorn, CB, New York: Made six tackles and picked off two Tony Banks passes, returning one 34 yards for a game-sealing touchdown with 2:57 left.
|
| CNNSI.com's Breakdown |
The Giants got a bit of a scare from the hapless Redskins before putting the game away with a fourth-quarter surge. But its not like Washington's offense was doing much, as Brett Conway was the only method of scoring with his three field goals. New York controlled with ball for 38:31 with 46 carries for 142 yards. Second-year running back Damon Washington filled in with 90 yards on 25 carries after Ron Dayne went out with an injured neck.

Recap
Game Summary
|
| Key Stat |
275 -- Advantage in total yards for the Ravens (460) over the Titans (185).
|
| Player of the Game |
Rod Woodson, FS, Baltimore: Led the Ravens' defensive attack with 10 tackles and an interception.
|
| CNNSI.com's Breakdown |
The vaunted Ravens defense lived up to the hype against the Titans, holding Eddie George to 26 yards on 13 carries before knocking him out of the game. Baltimore finally found its ground game and outrushed Tennessee 207-47. Terry Allen came alive with 108 yards rushing and one touchdown, while backup Jason Brookins added 15 carries for 68 yards and one touchdown.

Game Summary
|
| Key Stat |
13 -- Fourth-quarter comeback wins in Jake Plummer's five years with the Cardinals.
|
| Player of the Game |
Jake Plummer, QB, Arizona: Looked like the comeback Snake of old, leading the Cards back to the last-second victory while throwing only one interception.
|
| CNNSI.com's Breakdown |
The Cardinals scored early and late, while doing little in between, but it's the final result that matters. MarTay Jenkins six catches for 119 and one touchdown, including the game-winner with nine seconds left. Eagles running back Correll Buckhalter had 21 carries for 134 yards in his first career start and Todd Pinkston had the finest game of his young career with four catches for 90 yards and two touchdowns. But even a solid offensive effort by the Eagles wasn't enough to prevent Plummer's comeback magic.

Recap
Game Summary
|
| Key Stat |
209 -- Advantage in rushing yards for the Steelers (274) over the Bengals (65).
|
| Players of the Game |
Jerome Bettis, RB, Pittsburgh: The Bus became the 14th player in NFL history to pass 10,000 career rushing yards by piling up 153 yards on 23 carries against Bengals.
|
| CNNSI.com's Breakdown |
The Steelers opened Heinz Field in style, showcasing a punishing rushing attack and stout defense that looked like the vintage teams that played in Three Rivers. The Bengals gained only 214 yards as the Steelers limited them to 3.8 yards per play. Kordell Stewart played his first good game of the season, throwing for 151 yards and running for 61 more and a touchdown.

|
| Player of the Game |
Ricky Williams, RB, New Orleans: Rushed 30 times for 136 yards, and added five catches for 42 yards.
|
| CNNSI.com's Breakdown |
The Vikings' offense appears to be nowhere near its old self so far this season. The Saints sacked Daunte Culpepper six times, with 2000 sack leader La'Roi Glover and Darren Howard getting two apiece. Culpepper finished with 332 yards passing, but Cris Carter and Randy Moss were held in check with only eight combined catches for 132 yards.

|
| Player of the Game |
Curtis Martin, RB, New York: Carried the ball 26 times for a season-high 135 yards and two touchdowns.
|
| CNNSI.com's Breakdown |
Could there be another quarterback controversy brewing in Buffalo? After Rob Johnson was injured, Alex Van Pelt brought the Bills back from a 28-9 deficit, finishing 23 of 41 for 268 yards and three touchdowns. Buffalo's second-round pick, Travis Henry, ran for a career-high 113 yards and Eric Moulds and Peerless Price each had 100-yard receiving games, but the Bills still lost.

|
| CNNSI.com's Breakdown |
Mike Anderson carried 22 times for 155 yards and one touchdown, the fifth time in his 19-game career he has rushed for more than 130 yards. Rod Smith continued to perform well in the absence of Ed McCaffrey, catching eight passes for 110 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, Denver was able to hold Priest Holmes to 100 total yards just one week after he went for 225 against the Redskins.

Jacksonville 15 |
Recap
Game Summary
|
| Key Stat |
9.1 -- Average yards per pass attempt by the Seahawks, who were averaging only 5.6 yards per attempt in their first three games.
|
| Player of the Game |
Shaun Alexander, RB, Seattle: Rushed for a career-high 176 yards and two touchdowns filling in for the injured Ricky Watters.
|
| CNNSI.com's Breakdown |
Maybe the Seahawks should stick with their backups. With Watters and Matt Hasselbeck out with injuries, Alexander and Trent Dilfer jumpstarted their sluggish offense. Dilfer completed 15 of 23 passes for 219 yards and one touchdown in his first significant action since Super Bowl XXXV. Seattle outgained Jacksonville on the ground 185-57 and controlled the ball for 33:06.

Recap
Stats Matchup
|
| Key Stat |
41.7 -- Quincy Carter's completion percentage in the NFL. Carter has completed only 10 of 24 passes for 38 yards, which works out to a miserable 1.58 yards per attempt.
|
| Player of the Game |
Rich Gannon, QB, Oakland: Didn't do anything spectacular, but completed 75 percent of his passes for 209 yards and one touchdown.
|
| CNNSI.com's Breakdown |
The final score makes this game seem closer than it actually was. Oakland led 28-7 until the final minute of the third quarter and then allowed two meaningless touchdowns. Tim Brown caught seven passes for 114 yards and Jerry Rice added seven for 51 yards and a score, his third touchdown in the past two weeks.

Game Summary
|
| Key Stat |
79.3 -- Brad Johnson's completion percentage (23 of 29) against the Packers on Sunday, giving him a 70.4 success rate (69 of 98) on the season.
|
| Player of the Game |
Shelton Quarles, LB, Tampa Bay: Made only two tackles, but his 98-yard interception return for a touchdown averted a possible Packers touchdown and was a key 14-point swing in the first half.
|
| CNNSI.com's Breakdown |
Green Bay outplayed Tampa Bay but fell victim to turnovers in the red zone and saw its seven-game winning streak ended as a result. Brett Favre's three interceptions were his most since Nov. 27, 2000, not coincidentally the last Packers loss before Sunday. Mike Alstott rushed 15 times for 77 yards, more than doubling his prior season output of 36 yards.

|
| CNNSI.com's Breakdown |
The 49ers are quietly 3-1 and positioning themselves to be in the hunt for a wild-card berth. San Francisco backed up its impressive ground attack from last week with another solid effort running the ball, and the 49ers have gained 383 yards rushing in the past two games. Chris Weinke threw for 275 yards, but was picked off twice and the Panthers only scored one offensive touchdown.

Detroit 0 |
Recap
Game Summary
|
| Key Stat |
0 -- Losses by the Rams; wins by the Lions.
|
| Player of the Game |
Kurt Warner, QB, St. Louis: Completed 27 of 39 passes for 291 yards and three TDs. |
| CNNSI.com's Breakdown |
The Rams are going to throw the football and so far there's little any team can do about it. Warner, who leads the NFL with 11 TD passes, threw 16 consecutive passes in two first-half scoring drives. The Rams had only three rushing plays in the first half. The new regime of CEO Matt Millen and head coach Marty Mornhinweg is off to a rough start in Detroit. The defense couldn't stop the pass and the offense couldn't score. The Lions got inside the Rams' 30 just three times and each ended in a turnover, including a 93-yard interception return for a TD by Dre' Bly. |
