1999 NFL Europe Schedule Posted: Sunday January 10, 1999 05:17 PM
Tne NFL Europe League kicks off its seventh season on April 17 with a new team in Berlin to start a 10-week schedule capped by World Bowl '99 in Dusseldorf on June 27. The Berlin Thunder make their debut against the Frankfurt Galaxy in Frankfurt's Waldstadion, which drew more than 47,000 fans for last year's World Bowl. The Berlin franchise will take the place of what was the London Monarchs. "It is an exciting way for us to begin life in the NFL Europe League," said Berlin general manager Michael Lang. "There is always an incredible atmosphere in the Waldstadion, especially for Deutschland Derby games. Our fans can't wait for the team to begin playing and I am sure many of them will be in Frankfurt to cheer for us." Berlin plays its first-ever home game one week later against the Scottish Claymores in Jahn Stadium. The reigning NFL Europe champs, the Rhein Fire, open on the road for the first time in four years, against the Claymores. "It will be a tough game to start the season, but there are no easy games in a league as competitive as this - especially when everyone is trying to take away your title," said Fire coach Galen Hall. Said NFL Europe president Oliver Luck: "There are exciting matchups in every week of the 1999 schedule. In a relatively short space of time, the league has developed some great rivalries and the addition of the third German team certainly adds to that."
