DUSSELDORF, Germany (Ticker) -- Chris Griesen tossed a 17-yard touchdown pass to Kendall Newson with 6:06 remaining to lift the Rhein Fire to a 28-21 victory over the Berlin Thuder. Griesen, who split the game with Nick Rolovich, completed 5-of-6 passes for 59 yards as Rhein improved to 5-3 to tie the Frankfurt Galaxy and Barcelona Dragons atop the NFL Europe standings. The Fire defeated Rhein in Week Five and the teams meet next week at Frankfurt. The Fire lost to the Dragons in Week Four and they finish the regular season at Rhein on June 7. Phil Stambaugh was 22-of-37 for 243 yards and two interceptions for Berlin, which defeated Rhein in last year's World Bowl. David Allen carried 15 times for 82 yards as the Thunder fell to 2-6. Allen had a 15-yard touchdown run to give the Thunder a 21-20 edge 4:02 into the fourth quarter. Autry Denson, who entered the game averaging a league-leading 5.7 yards per carry, rushed 13 times for 69 yards for Rhein. J.R. Jenkins kicked field goals of 52 and 45 yards for the Thunder. The latter tied the score at 14 with 4:56 to play in the first half. Thirty-nine-year-old Ingo Anderbrugge kicked a 25-yard field to give the Fire a 17-14 edge 2:55 into the third. He added a 19-yard field to make it 20-14 with 5:02 left in the third. |
