NFL Europe Recap (Frankfurt-Scot Claymores)
Posted: Sun May 2, 1999 at 3:29 p.m. EDTFRANKFURT 42, SCOT CLAYMORES 35 (OT)
EDINBURGH, Scotland (Ticker) -- Quarterback Pat Barnes ran two yards for the winning touchdown on the first possession of overtime to give the Frankfurt Galaxy a 42-35 victory over the Scottish Claymores. NFL Europe League rules give each team an overtime possession and after Frankfurt's score the Claymores drove to within striking distance of the end zone, but fumbled. Frankfurt struck first after a slow start when Jake Delhomme engineered an 11-play, 75-yard scoring drive that culminated in a 13-yard pass on the run to a wide-open Todd Floyd in the end zone. The Galaxy doubled the lead when Barnes, allocated by the Oakland Raiders and alternating with Delhomme, led a 12-play, 87-yard scoring drive. Five-year veteran Mario Bailey caught his 18th NFL Europe career touchdown on a 14-yard connection over the middle. Bailey also broke the league record for receptions as his 10 catches for 110 yards gave him 153 for his career, two more than Demetrius Davis. The elusive Dameyune Craig found wideout Kevin Drake free in the end zone from 13 yards to cut the Galaxy lead in half. In a dramatic end to the half, Barnes expertly guided the Galaxy to within striking distance of the end zone but was picked off by Joey Eloms, whose pass interference call had led to the first Frankfurt score, and the cornerback raced untouched down the left sideline 90 yards to tie it. A second straight interception opened the second half as Denorse Moseley stole Delhomme's pass in the Claymores end zone. Scotland drove downfield to take its first lead of the game on a 39-yard field goal by Rob Hart. Eloms turned from hero to villain as he fumbled a punt by Barry Cantrell at the Claymores 22-yard line and Whit Marshall recovered. Delhomme to hit Shawn Scales from three yards to edge Galaxy back in front. Jermaine Chaney then broke virtually untouched 47 yards to the end zone on the next Frankfurt possession for an 11-point advantage. Eloms produced his second interception of Barnes and Craig hooked up with Yo Murphy on a 43-yard scoring pass and Donald Sellars on two-point conversion. Rob Hart tied it, 28-28, with a 42-yard field goal. Andy McCullough won a 39-yard foot race to the end zone on a pass from Delhomme to score with 2:21 remaining, but Craig found a diving Sellers at the 1 and ran in on a sneak with 31 seconds left to force overtime.
