NFL Europe Recap (Barcelona-Scot Claymores)
Posted: Sun May 9, 1999 at 2:43 p.m. EDTSCOT CLAYMORES 31, BARCELONA 21
MURRAYFIELD, Scotland (Ticker) -- The Barcelona Dragons suffered their first defeat of the season and became the last team NFL Europe League to lose as the Scottish Claymores forced a three-way tie for first place with a 31-21 triumph. The Claymores' Jesse Haynes started the scoring with a 14-yard burst through fine blocking for a 7-0 just 2:52 into the game. The defenses dominated the remainder of the first quarter before Barcelona drove quickly downfield to tie it on a gadget play. Running back Lawrence Phillips, on a 3rd-and-goal from the 6, threw an unexpected option pass to Mexican wide receiver Marcos Martos for a touchdown. Phillips carried 19 times for 95 yards, the first time this season he has been held under 100 yards. Haynes found the end zone with a determined second effort on 3rd-and-goal from inches to cap a 14-play, 83-yard drive, aided by the scrambling of quarterback Dameyune Craig. Barcelona relied on quarterback Todd Bouman to gain a crucial yard on fourth down and the Minnesota Vikings-allocated passer then looped a pass into the corner of the end zone, where Brian Finneran made a spectacular catch to tie it with 26 seconds left in the half. The Claymores regained the lead on their first possession of a rain-swept second half when Craig hooked up with Donald Sellers on a 24-yard touchdown, then defensive tackle Emile Palmer recovered a fumble as Barcelona stalled and Scotland again drove downfield. A 49-yard connection between a composed Craig and Michael Jenkins set up a 26-yard field goal by Rob Hart and opened a 10-point advantage. Craig began the fourth quarter by evading a sack to find Yo Murphy 41 yards downfield, then Haynes burst 24 yards to the one-yard mark and Sellers collected his second touchdown grab for a 31-14 lead. Finneran's height again earned him a touchdown, a six-yard reception from Bouman, then the 6-5 receiver recovered Rafael Garcia's onside kick. But safety Steve Rosga halted the Dragons' comeback bid when he made a crucial late interception and Tony Watkins also picked off Bouman at the two-minute warning.
