XFL SCOREBOARD: Preview
This Week's Scoreboard
Birmingham at NY/NJ
Posted: Friday February 09, 2001 09:17 AM

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- The only home team to lose on the XFL's opening weekend was Birmingham. The Bolts hope for better luck outside Alabama when they visit the New York-New Jersey Hitmen on Sunday afternoon.

Birmingham (0-1) spotted Memphis a 19-0 advantage and never recovered in a 22-20 loss to the Maniax on Sunday.

The Bolts pulled within two points on Casey Weldon's 33-yard TD strike to Quincy Jackson with 22 seconds remaining, but Memphis recovered the onside kick.

Weldon struggled in the first half, completing 10-of-21 passes, and many fans at Legion Field chanted for Jay Barker. But the former Alabama quarterback never got off the bench.

Playing in the marquee Opening Night game on NBC, the Hitmen (0-1) were barely competitive in a 19-0 loss to the Las Vegas Outlaws.

New York could not get anything going offensively for most of the game, gaining just 217 yards. Charles Puleri was 6-of-19 for 70 yards and an interception before suffering a concussion in the third quarter.

New York/New Jersey's lone threat came in the fourth quarter when it reached the Las Vegas 7. But it lost the ball on downs following a sack.

Former New York Giant Keith Elias was New York/New Jersey's top rusher with 45 yards. Fred Brock caught eight passes for 96 yards.

Giants Stadium is the home of the Hitmen, where a crowd in the neighborhood of 40,000 is expected for the home opener.
