Woods is the lone entry to the 1998 Grand Slam of Golf without a major championship. However, Mark O'Meara's two major victories opened a spot for the first alternate. The alternate is chosen on a point system based on competition in the major championships. One of the qualifications for alternates is to have won a major before 1998. The other qualification is to have the best combined finish in the four majors in 1998. Woods finished with 210.75 points, 38.75 points ahead of second-alternate Jose Maria-Olazabal. MARK O'MEARA

The Masters victory was his first career major title and rid him of the infamous label, "best player to have never won a major." O'Meara captured the title in historic fashion, becoming the first player in 38 years to finish the tournament birdie-birdie. At the third major of the year, it took a four-hole playoff for O'Meara to capture the British Open championship. With the victory at Royal Birkdale in Southport, England on July 19, O'Meara became the oldest player ever to win two or more major championships in one season. VIJAY SINGH
