Posted: Friday November 13, 1998 05:52 PM

The four players competing in the 1998 Grand Slam of Golf scheduled for November 17-18 at Poipu Bay Resort Golf Club are listed in order of seeding.

TIGER WOODS

  Mark Lyons/Allsport

1998 PGA Tour Events Played: 20

Best Finish: 1st (BellSouth Classic)

Cuts Made: 19

Top 10 Finishes: 13

Rounds Played: 77

Rounds Under Par: 41

Rounds in the 60s: 31

1998 Earnings: $1,841,117

Seed at Grand Slam: No. 1

How he got to the Grand Slam: Tiger Woods comes to Poipu Bay as the first alternate. Woods is the lone entry to the 1998 Grand Slam of Golf without a major championship. However, Mark O'Meara's two major victories opened a spot for the first alternate.

The alternate is chosen on a point system based on competition in the major championships. One of the qualifications for alternates is to have won a major before 1998. The other qualification is to have the best combined finish in the four majors in 1998.

Woods finished with 210.75 points, 38.75 points ahead of second-alternate Jose Maria-Olazabal.

MARK O'MEARA

  Stephen Munday/Allsport

Seed at Grand Slam: No. 2

1998 PGA Tour Events Played: 19

Best Finish: 1st (The Masters, British Open)

Cuts Made: 15

Top 10 Finishes: 7

Rounds Played: 66

Rounds Under Par: 39

Rounds in the 60s: 26

1998 Earnings: $1,786,699

How he got to the Grand Slam: Mark O'Meara heads into Poipu Bay having won two majors in 1998, the Masters and the British Open. The Masters victory was his first career major title and rid him of the infamous label, "best player to have never won a major." O'Meara captured the title in historic fashion, becoming the first player in 38 years to finish the tournament birdie-birdie.

At the third major of the year, it took a four-hole playoff for O'Meara to capture the British Open championship. With the victory at Royal Birkdale in Southport, England on July 19, O'Meara became the oldest player ever to win two or more major championships in one season.

VIJAY SINGH

  Craig Jones/Allsport

1998 PGA Tour Events Played: 26

Singh became the first person from Fiji to win a major golf title. The PGA Championship was Singh's first major championship and was worth $540,000.

LEE JANZEN

  Andrew Redington/Allsport

1998 PGA Tour Events Played: 22

Best Finish: 1st (U.S. Open)

Rounds Played: 82

Janzen's victory at The Olympic Club was by one stroke over Payne Stewart. Janzen overcame bogeys on two of the first three holes, rallying to shoot 4 under par the rest of the way.

In 1993 at the Grand Slam, Janzen finished with a two-day total of 148, three strokes behind the winner, Greg Norman.
