Hole No. 1
The field will face a very friendly opening hole -- a dogleg-right with a split-level fairway, elevated on the left and flat on the right, the latter giving the best angle to the green. The second shot is hit downhill and must avoid bunkers that look close to the green but actually are 40 yards in front of it. Many players will be able to reach this green with an iron, leading to a lot of birdies and few eagles. 1987 U.S. Open Scoring Average: 4.95 (18th)
