Golf fans say the darndest things. Some comments are directed at the players, some at fellow rooters, but the Fly on the Ball caught them all during Saturday's third round at Olympic Club.
JOHN DALY DRIVE ... To get to Olympic Club you take John Daly Boulevard, in Daly City. Then, on Saturday, we finally got to see golf's John Daly drive. Perhaps feeling he had nothing to lose, Daly ended the embargo on his driver. The buzz was that he'd hit driver, 9-iron on No. 1 and driven the 288-yard par-4 7th. I watched him powder one off the 10th tee, miles past playing partner Colin Montgomerie, but it all looked the same on the scorecard. Daly and Monty each made par 4 on the hole. Now that he's totally out of contention, Daly is likely to do virtually anything on Sunday, up to and including speed golf if he gets frustrated and loses interest. THE FLY ON THE BALL SAW ... Senior tour star Isao Aoki just off th 17th green, working as a commentator for Asahi TV in Japan. Payne Stewart recognized Aoki and said hello after making a nifty up-and-down on the long hole. .. Playful kids, tucking their arms in and rolling downhill from aside the 17th een. Here's a testament to the severity of Olympic's hills: they got dizzy and quiet. ... A rotund fan lying on his back near No. 17, with his shirt off, belly showing and a huge clump of Olympic rough sitting, to put it discreetly, where the figleaf usually goes. MR. BLACKWELL WOULD GET A BANG OUT OF ... Jose-Maria Olazabal, in black slacks and a turquoise shirt. He looked like a Florida Marlin. ... Jesper Parnevik's mod black shoes. ... Ed Romero's loud red shirt, which, come to think of it, looked suspiciously like the same loud red shirt he wore on Thursday. FINAL THOUGHTS ... I've walked up, down and across the hills of Olympic Club. My dogs are barking and my ankles are casualties of pronating from an upright position -- a compulsory event at the `98 Open. But it's been a fun, El Nino -defying week. I'll remember the cart of Casey, the smile of Matt and the snickers of Payne. I'll recall the Mary of Hale (after shooting an opening round 80, Irwin shot 68 and nearly made the cut), the hang-gliders dodging Daly drives, and the San Francisco fog. Until July, by which time I hope to be able to pronounce Sahalee (site of the PGA), may all of life's rough spots be obliterated by a Toro. So long.
