After winning last week at Loch Lomond, Montgomerie can earn a $1 million bonus with a victory at the British Open. Ross Kinnaird/Allsport

CARNOUSTIE, Scotland (SportLive.net) -- Colin Montgomerie got his Open challenge firmly back on track in the third round at windswept Carnoustie.

The 36-year-old Scot wrote off his hopes of a first major title following a disappointing 76 in Friday's second round.

But after watching everyone else struggle with the combination of wind, narrow fairways and high rough, Europe's number one for the last six years found himself just seven off the overnight lead held by France's Jean Van De Velde.

And he made the perfect start to his round with four solid pars followed by a birdie from eight feet on the fifth to get him to seven over and still on target for a $1 million bonus from sponsors Standard Life for winning their tournament last week at Loch Lomond and the Open.

Montgomerie will also have taken heart from the fact that despite all the horror stories coming in from the course -- Lee Janzen going eight-four-six to drop seven shots in the three holes -- Australian Craig Parry was proving good scoring was possible.

A superb approach to the par five sixth left him just six feet for a third birdie of the day and after saving par from 20 feet at the ninth he reached the turn in 33.

Another birdie from 12 feet at the next then took him to five over and the diminutive Australian, known as "Popeye" due to his short but powerful build, found himself just four shots off the lead.
