CARNOUSTIE, Scotland (AP) -- Rather than simply complaining about knee-high weeds and wasp-waisted fairways at Carnoustie, defending U.S. Open champion Payne Stewart campaigned off the 18th green Saturday to make sure it doesn't happen next year at St. Andrews.

"We'll have to wait ad see how they [Royal and Ancient] set St. Andrews up." he said. "If they do this to St. Andrews, it's not going to be any fun at all. ... Maybe they've learned a lesson this week, I don't know. We'll have to wait and see."

Stewart, saying that amateur bodies like the R and A and United States Golf Association "set up the courses their way," he asked reporters to give both bodies some heat.

"It's up to you guys to write and everybody else to get the R and A to listen."

Stewart, who shot 3-over 74 Saturday to go 13-over, was still calculating how he might still have a chance in what he calls golf's "foremost" tournament.

"I do think 6 over par would still win it," he said, which means Stewart would need a 7-under on Sunday -- tying the course record of 64.

"I still don't think I can win it. There is just going to have to be some magic tomorrow. Seven-under would be a pretty phenomenal round of golf, but you never know."

The two-time U.S. Open champion would surely trade one of those titles to win an Open.

"My attitude hasn't changed on the Open," he said, separating that from the widely criticized conditions at Carnoustie. "I am disappointed in the course set up, but my view of the British Open hasn't changed. I love the tournament and I think it is the foremost golf tournament in the world.

"It's always been that way to me, even being an American and having won two U.S. Opens. I've always held the British Open dear to my heart and it would really complete my career if I could win one."
