CARNOUSTIE, Scotland (AP) -- A brief look at the fourth round of the 128th British Open, played on the 7,361-yard, par-71 Carnoustie Golf Links: WINNING: Paul Lawrie in a four-hole, three-way playoff over Jean Van de Velde and Justin Leonard. GREATEST COMEBACK: Lawrie started the day 10 strokes behind Van de Velde and won the biggest turnaround in a major. COLLAPSING: Van de Velde hit it in the water, rough and sand and took a triple bogey seven on the 72nd hole to force the playoff when a double bogey would have won. SUB-PAR: There were only 18 sub-par rounds in four days at Carnoustie. NO BIRDS: Tiger Woods went 35 holes without a birdie and had only six in the four rounds. WORTH NOTING: This was only Lawrie's third victory on the European Tour. It guaranteed him his first spot on the Ryder Cup team. WHO IS HE?: Lawrie turned professional in 1986 and had won only two European PGA events before this one: the Catalonia Open in 1996 and the Qatar Masters this year. THE CASH: Lawrie picks up $577,500 and Leonard and Van de Velde get $305,250. FIRST: Lawrie becomes the first qualifier to win the Open since exemptions were first granted in 1963. BEST QUOTE: Justin Leonard -- "Basically, I lost the British Open twice on one day, which is twice as hard to take." NEXT-BEST QUOTE: Jean Van de Velde -- "I didn't even go for the glory, that wasn't even glory. That wasn't something absolutely bad I was trying to do. You know, it just came out to be a nightmare." |
