POIPU, Hawaii (AP) -- British Open winner Paul Lawrie conceded his PGA Grand Slam match to Jose Maria Olazabal on Wednesday after injuring his right ankle.

Lawrie had just finished the ninth hole at the Poipu Bay Resort course on Kauai when he tripped over a rock. He stepped on another rock in an effort to balance himself, but turned the ankle instead.

Lawrie was taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital, where tests showed no break but several stretched ligaments. Still, Lawrie said he would try to play in next week's Sun City tournament in South Africa.

"The doctors said I should heal pretty quickly," said Lawrie, who returned to the resort on crutches, wearing a temporary boot cast. "It was just a freak thing."

The match was stopped after the ninth hole with Olazabal leading, 1 up. "It was too bad since we were having a good match," Lawrie said. "It's unfortunate it finished as it did."
