Jones' ceremony is back on again

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) -- A plan to honor golf great Bobby Jones during Masters week by unveiling a historical marker, which was canceled earlier this week, is back on again.

The Georgia Historical Society had sent 200 invitations to the April 7 ceremony at the old Forest Hills clubhouse on Augusta State University property, but the event was scrapped on Monday after college officials complained they had been left out of the planning.

The plan was salvaged Thursday after sponsors and university officials met.

"We had a very nice meeting today with all the parties concerned, and I think we've worked through everything," said Todd Groce, executive director of the historical society.

Augusta State president Bill Bloodworth said he is looking forward to the event. He said the school's initial opposition stemmed from being caught off guard by invitations.

The building was in use when Jones won the Southeastern Open in 1930, setting the stage for his Grand Slam performance during the following five months. The $1,500 bronze sign will be the Historical Society's first such marker erected since the statewide program was reinstated last fall.
