MEDINAH, Ill. (Reuters) -- Sergio Garcia lost his Medinah magic touch Friday as the 19-year-old Spanish sensation wasted a wealth of opportunities in the second round of the 81st PGA Championship.

Garcia, who shot a course record-tying six-under-par 66 to lead the field by two strokes after Thursday's opening round, posted a frustrating one-over 73 to drift four shots behind the surging Jay Haas.

"I'm a little disappointed because I probably played better than yesterday, but my putter didn't work very good," said Garcia, who had been the youngest player ever to lead the PGA Championship.

Garcia's long game was nearly impeccable -- he missed just two fairways -- but the precocious Spaniard squandered seven birdie opportunities including three from eight feet, one from 10, two from 12 and an 18-footer at the 18th that fell away just short of the cup.

"If I putted well today, it could be another great round, but it wasn't."

Garcia, who already has a European Tour victory since turning professional in April, is chasing after an automatic Ryder Cup berth awarded to the top 10 finishers on the Cup standings list. He is currently in 12th position.

The talented teen-ager is still full of confidence.

"I'm still happy that without having my best day, I'm still there," he said. "But I am kind of a little mad because I didn't deserve a 73."
