The rainy skies christening the 1999 U.S. Open were a welcome sight for many of the assembled pros. The weather softened Pinehurst No.2's notorious turtle-shelled greens, allowing the players to attack the pins. As a result, 34 golfers ended the round within three strokes of the lead.
