PINEHURST, N.C. (AP) -- Facts and figures for the U.S. Open golf championship:

Event: 99th U.S. Open golf championship.

Dates: June 17-20

Site: Pinehurst Resort and Country Club, No. 2 Course, Pinehurst, N.C.

The Course: Originally developed by Donald Ross and opened in 1903. Rees Jones did the most recent renovations in preparation for this U.S. Open.

Length: 7,175 yards.

Par: 35-35-70.

Format: 72 holes (18 daily) stroke play. Playoff, if necessary: 18 holes June 21.

Field: 156 (149 pros, 7 amateurs).

Purse: $3.5 million

Winners share: $625,000.

Last year: At The Olympic Club in San Francisco, Lee Janzen finished with a 2-under-par 68 and was the only contender to break par in the final round. Among the top six finishers, the next best score was a 3-over 73. Payne Stewart held a four stroke lead over Tom Lehman and Bob Tway after three rounds (3-under-par 207), then shot a final round 74 that included a bogey 6 on the 16th hole. Janzen started five strokes behind after three rounds, and fell seven back with bogeys at 2 and 3 before rallying to make four birdies the rest of the way.

Former champion at this venue: First U.S. Open at Pinehurst.

Former champions in field: Ernie Els (1994, 1997), Steve Jones (1996), Corey Pavin (1995), Lee Janzen (1993, 1998), Tom Kite (1992), Payne Stewart (1991), Hale Irwin (1974, 1979, 1990), Curtis Strange (1988-89), Fuzzy Zoeller (1984), Tom Watson (1982), Jack Nicklaus (1962, 1967, 1972, 1980).

Television (all times ET): Thursday and Friday, Noon-3 p.m. (ESPN), 3-5 p.m. (NBC), 5-7:30 p.m. (ESPN); Saturday and Sunday, 12:30-7 p.m. (NBC); Monday (if necessary), Noon-2 p.m. (ESPN), 2 p.m.-conclusion (NBC).
