PINEHURST, N.C. (AP) -- A brief look at the fourth round of the U.S. Open, played on the 7,175-yard, par-70 Pinehurst No. 2 course:

Winner: Payne Stewart, with a 15-foot par putt on the final hole to beat Phil Mickelson by a shot. It was the first time a putt of that length had been made to win in the 99-year history of the Open.

Just behind: Mickelson missed a 25-foot birdie putt of his own on the last hole that would have given him a share of the lead. If the two had tied, they would have gone to an 18-hole Monday playoff.

Shot of the day: Stewart rolling the uphill putt into the center of the cup on 18.

Key statistic: Stewart had only 24 putts in 18 holes. He one-putted 12 times and two-putted the rest of the holes.

What it's worth: Stewart earned $625,000 for the win, while Mickelson got $370,000 for finishing second.

What else it's worth: The win ensured Stewart a spot on the Ryder Cup team that will play in September.

Note of the day: Stewart's wife, Tracey, gave her husband a putting tip after Saturday's round, telling him to keep his head still. He went out and practiced with his eyes closed to get the feel.

Quote of the day: "With three holes to go, I felt like I was in control of the tournament." -- Mickelson, who went on to play the last three holes 1 over and lose by one.

No baby yet: Mickelson's wife, Amy, made it through the tournament without having to page her husband and tell him their daughter is on the way.
