High praise from Calcavecchia

By Gary Van Sickle, Sports Illustrated

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland -- Mark Calcavecchia, who is never at a loss for a colorful quote, said what a lot of players, writers and observers were thinking. He had just finished off his British Open, shooting 69 to finish at 5-under-par 283, and stopped off by the Old Course clubhouse to talk with a few writers. Somehow, the topic of Tiger Woods came up, possibly since Woods was in the process of capturing his fourth major. Woods had teed off only 20 minutes earlier but, Calc and just about everyone else figured, he was probably going to win.

"He's the best player who ever played the game right now and he's 24," Calcavecchia said. " Jack Nicklaus has the greatest record of all time and when all is said and done, he still might have the greatest record of all time. But if Jack was in his prime today, I don't think he could keep up with Tiger.

"They say nobody has it all, but Tiger does. Jack had it all mentally but Tiger is his equal there. His swing is just so good. Driver, irons, flop shots, putting, chipping -- you name it, he's got it."

Calcavecchia played two practice rounds with Woods. On Wednesday, they played a $1,000 no-bogey match, a game in which the player who went 18 holes without a bogey paid the other. Calc lasted until the 12th hole before making a bogey, Woods the 17th.

"I wasn't at Pebble Beach [for the U.S Open]," Calcavecchia said. "I was sitting on a lake in northern Idaho. Obviously, it was pretty impressive. St. Andrews is perfect for him. The way he's playing, every course is to his advantage."

Asked if Woods is going to dominate every major like he has at the U.S. Open and now the British, Calc grimaced. "He's not going to do this every major," he said. "At least I hope not. You just have to take your hat off to him. The way he has dominated today's game, when there are as many good players as there are, is really incredible."

Calc wasn't the leader in the clubhouse when he finished, but he did lead the ensuing parade of praise that followed Woods' record-setting victory.
