Grand Slam of Golf Player Profiles
 | Tiger Woods
Age: 24.
Ranking: 1.
Worldwide Victories: 27.
Majors: Masters ('97), U.S. Open ('00), British Open ('00),
PGA ('99, '00).
Backspin: Fresh off his Johnnie Walker Classic win, Tiger Woods goes for his third straight PGA Grand Slam of Golf title, having captured the last two in match-play format. The American Express Championship at Valderrama two weeks ago marked the third consecutive time Woods was within two strokes of the lead going into the final round and failed to win.
But he was back in prime form in Thailand.
| |
 | Vijay Singh
Age: 37.
Country: Fiji.
Ranking: 9.
Worldwide Victories: 28.
Majors: PGA ('98), Masters ('00).
Backspin: Vijay Singh appears to have found the putting stroke that deserted him the second half of the season, evidenced by a pair of third-place finishes at the Tour Championship and American Express Championship. And Singh would love nothing more than to top Tiger, against whom he played a contentious match at the Presidents Cup.
| |
 | Tom Lehman
Age: 41.
Ranking: 12.
Worldwide Victories: 7.
Majors: British Open ('96).
Backspin: Before he proves otherwise, Tom Lehman can't be considered a serious threat in Hawaii -- or anywhere else, for that matter. Hobbled this season by various injuries, Lehman has posted just two top-10 finishes since April, and is an aggregate 15 over par in his last four tournaments.
| |
 | Paul Azinger
Age: 31.
Ranking: 33.
Worldwide Victories: 14.
Majors: PGA ('93).
Backspin: If it's windy at Poipu Bay -- and it usually is -- look for Azinger to flourish. Nobody, save Tiger Woods, is better at hitting the low punch shot. Then there's positive karma on Azinger's side. Remember in January he cruised to a seven-shot win at the Sony Open in Honolulu for his first win since the 1993 PGA Championship.
