For the fourth time in five rounds at Valderrama, No. 17 bit Tiger. He pushed his tee shot into the trees on the right. From a tough lie and with tree branches hanging low in front of him, Tiger advanced his ball only a few yards, then punched out to the layup area. His approach pitch looked perfect, but it backed up and rolled down the embankment into the pond, effectively ending any chance he had.

Tiger followed his disaster at 17 with a hacker-like bogey at 18. He hit a nice tee shot to the center of the fairway, then pulled his approach left, his ball coming to rest on a cart path. He got relief, and his pitch came out hot, ran across the green and into a bunker. He hit a nice blast to 5 feet and made the putt for a closing bogey.
