DULUTH, Ga. (Reuters) -- Third alternate Briny Baird of the United States was added to the field for the 83rd PGA Championship on Monday, taking the spot reserved for last week's Buick Open winner.

Kenny Perry, who won the tournament at Grand Blanc, Michigan, on Sunday, had already qualified for the season's last major championship, which begins on Thursday at Atlanta Athletic Club.

The withdrawal of two Japanese players -- 33rd-ranked Toshimitsu Izawa and Jumbo Ozaki, No. 94 in the world -- had opened the way for Glen Day and Len Mattiace, the first and second alternates.

Izawa withdrew on Sunday due to an injured thumb, while Ozaki informed officials on Friday that he could not play because of a bad back.

The Ozaki family will be represented, however, as Joe Ozaki, Jumbo's brother, line up with compatriots Hidemichi Tanaka, Toru Taniguchi, Shingo Katayama and Shigeki Maruyama among 49 players from outside the U.S.
