| The Georgian Resort |
1900 Georgian Parkway Villa Rica, GA 30180 770-459-4400 Distance from AAC: 50 mi. |
The Frog, as it is called, might not provide the most difficult challenge, as the fairways are more than generous and the greens just slightly contoured, but it is the best conditioned from tee box to green. Three of the four par-5's are reachable, including the 18th hole, which is perfect for settling a $2 Nassau. |
| White Columns G.C. |
300 White Columns Drive Alpharetta, GA 30004 770-343-9025 Distance from AAC: 19 mi. |
At close to $100 per round, it is not a bargain, but the conditions are excellent, and the views spectacular. Not as generous as the Frog off the tee, but you shouldn't spent too much time in the thick rough searching for golf balls. |
| Woodmont G.C. |
3105 Gaddis Road Canton, GA 30115 770-345-9260 Distance from AAC: 21 mi. |
A solid golf course from start to finish, and usually in superb condition. The back-to-back par-5 10th and par-5 11th holes are reachable in two, with the short par-3 11th one of the best 110-yarders you will ever find. |
| Emerald Pointe G.C. |
7000 Holiday Road Lake Lanier Islands, GA 30518 770-945-8789 Distance from AAC: 25 mi. |
Easily the prettiest golf course in the area with 13 holes bordering on Lake Lanier. It is short, at just more than 6,300 yards from the tips, but all you can handle, especially if you don't drive it straight. The 14th hole -- the No.1 handicap -- is a 436-yard, par-4 that forces you to carry fingers of the lake twice. Bring plenty of balls. |
| Cobblestone G.C. |
4200 Nance Road Acworth, GA 30101 770-917-5151 Distance from AAC: 39 mi. |
The best county-owned and operated golf course I've ever played. Like Emerald Pointe, is it short, 6,272 from the blue tees (the tips are 6,700), but this par-71 plays much longer than the actual yardage. Eight holes border Lake Alatoona, and because the golf course uses the lake for irrigation, it's always lush with the fairways a deep green. |
| RiverPines Golf |
4775 Old Alabama Road Alpharetta, GA 30022 770-442-5960 Distance from AAC: 2 mi. |
The nearest public course to the Atlanta Athletic Club. Only 6,500 yards from the tips, but it plays to a par-70, so the yardage is deceptive. The course is usually in excellent condition, but the greens tend to roll on the slow side. |
| Windermere G.C. |
5000 Davis Love Drive Cumming, GA 30041 678-513-1000 Distance from AAC: 17 mi. |
You would expect a golf course designed by Davis Love III to require a driver on every par-4 and par-5, but that's not the case. A handful of the holes are quirky, but fair. The uphill 450-yard par-5 18th is a gem of a finishing hole. The second shot is all carry over a lake to a small green, a perfect risk-reward finish. |
| Chestatee G.C. |
777 Dogwood Way Dawsonville, GA 30534 800-520-8675 Distance from AAC: 34 mi. |
A hilly golf course with a mix of tight par-4's and risk-reward par-5's. The par-5 16th is one of my favorites in the area. It measures 550 yards from the championship tee, but plays much shorter if you choose to go for the green in two by playing right of a stand of pine trees that split the fairway. |
| Olde Atlanta G.C. |
5750 Olde Atlanta Parkway Suwanee, GA 30024 770-497-0097 Distance from AAC: 9 mi. |
An Arthur Hills design through an upscale Alpharetta neighborhood, and I mean right through the neighborhood. You are forced to cross subdivision streets a handful of times. But with that said, it is a scenic, extremely fair layout. Great finishing hole, a par-5 18th, with the green fronted by a large pond. Bite off as much as you can chew. |
| Trophy Club of Gwinnett |
3254 Clubside View Court Snellville, GA 30039 770-978-7755 Distance from AAC: 30 mi. |
Perhaps not as dramatic as the other course on my list, but the staff always makes you feel at home, and the golf course is flat-out fun. The 17th hole is a true gripe-it-and-rip-it par-5. And the 18th is one of the most difficult par-4's in the area. It measures 459 yards from an elevated tee, with the second shot usually a fairway wood or long iron to an elevated green. I hope you don't need birdie to break 80! |
