Cranky Colin Monty departs U.S. Open depressed by poor finishUpdated: Sunday June 17, 2001 6:30 PM
TULSA, Okla. (Reuters) -- Colin Montgomerie wrapped up a disappointing weekend at the U.S. Open on Sunday, shooting a final-round 74 to be out of contention with a total of 292, an unsightly 12-over par. Montgomerie, who has twice finished as runner-up in the championship, said: "I had a very poor weekend. I got myself in position to do quite well and I didn't take it. "It was really disappointing. I was just playing around today, really, 74 was a good as I could do." Montgomerie entered weekend just 1-over par and within four shots of the lead. But a 77 on Saturday, during which he took out his frustration with harsh words for a walking volunteer scorer, and Sunday's 74 left him at 12-over for the tournament. "It threw me for today, really," he said of Saturday's dismal performance. "It was one of those things, never mind, try again." Montgomerie said he usually ranks courses by the way he plays, so Southern Hills is not likely to turn up on his top 10 list. "I tend to like the courses where you do well. I'll go away from here unfortunately not having enjoyed it. But that's nothing to do with the golf course, just my position." Montgomerie plans to return home, get some treatment for a sore back and prepare for the British Open starting on July 19. He said he will play a tournament at Loch Lomond the week before the Open at Royal Lytham.
