Greg Turner Greg Turner said he didn't feel comfortable Sunday until the later holes, when "it sort of fell for me." Mark Dadswell/Allsport

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) - New Zealand's Greg Turner closed with an even-par 72 for a 2-shot victory Sunday in the US$190,000 Australian PGA Championship at Victoria Golf Club.

Turner finished 10-under at 278, two ahead of Australian Shane Tait with Craig Parry, Robert Allenby and Nick O'Hern.

Turner, who was playing his first event after a five-week break, complained that he was battling swing problems but managed to stay in or at the lead only by finding form towards the end of his rounds.

"It was a tough day. I didn't feel particularly comfortable at any stage with my game so when you're in that circumstance it's going to be a battle," Turner said.

"I actually made some better swings at the end again, as with yesterday, and then it sort of fell for me."

Turner, a European tour player, claimed the 11th victory of his career and his sixth on the Australasian Tour.

Turner started the final round three ahead of Parry but by the fifth hole they were level at eight under. The New Zealander broke away to a four-shot lead at the 10th and seemed set to cruise home before Parry birdied 13 and 14 to seize the lead.

There was a two-shot swing at the par four 15th when Turner picked up a shot and Parr dropped one and then Parry had a double-bogey seven at the 17th.

Parry said he was in a position to take the title and was disgusted that he let the event slip.

"I feel like a very rank amateur at the moment, like an 18-year-old that just throws away a tournament," Parry said.
