Third strike could mean life David Casper pleads innocent to robbery, drug charges

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- The son of two-time U.S. Open golf champion Billy Casper has pleaded innocent to charges he robbed a downtown bar and possessed a short-barrel shotgun and numerous drugs. Prosecutors said Monday they will seek to have David Casper, 26, declared a habitual criminal if he is convicted at his Feb. 22 trial. If a judge made that declaration, Casper could get life in prison. Casper already has felony convictions for escape and burglary in other states. Nevada law permits a person to be declared a habitual criminal after a third conviction. Casper is also wanted in a string of up to 30 San Diego robberies. He is being held on $250,000 bail on the Nevada charges, but even if he posts it, he wouldn't be free because of the California warrants. Casper was arrested Nov. 11 by Las Vegas police who were pursuing the robbers of a bar. The targeting of Casper came after San Diego police alerted Las Vegas police that Casper might be in Las Vegas and was wanted in California on parole violation and robbery charges.
