SI senior columnist wins GWAA award

HOUSTON (AP) -- Ron Green Jr. of The Charlotte Observer won the daily news award for the second straight year, while Rick Reilly of Sports Illustrated picked up his fifth award in six years in the Golf Writers Association of America writing contest.

Green, who previously won the daily news category in 1989 and 1999, was honored this time for his coverage of the final round in the U.S. Open, won by Payne Stewart at Pinehurst No. 2.

Reilly won the non-daily column category on Jean Van de Velde's collapse in the British Open. Jeff Rude of Golfweek magazine won the non-daily news category on the same subject.

Ed Sherman of the Chicago Tribune won the daily special projects award for the second straight year for a look at golf in the 21st century. Glen Sheeley of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution won the daily feature category for a story on John Daly's decision to resume drinking.

Jim Achenbach of Golfweek.com won daily column for Arnold Palmer turning 70, Gary Smith of Sports Illustrated won non-daily features for a profile of David Duval, and Mike Purkey and others. Golf Magazine won non-daily special projects for a seven-part series on the state of the game.

All award winners will be honored at the GWAA's annual dinner April 5 in Augusta, Ga.
