Keep doing what I'm doing Posted: Tuesday March 07, 2000 11:42 AM
Leta Lindley, 27, is entering her sixth season on the LPGA Tour. She had her best year in 1999 with a tie for second, as well as four other top 10 finishes. In 1997, she finished second at the LPGA Championship, losing to Chris Johnson on the second hold of a sudden-death playoff. She was a four-time All-American at the University of Arizona and set an NCAA record for lowest 54-hole score (nine under par). Check out Lindley's diary each Wednesday on CNNSI.com.
March 6, 2000 It's raining and awful here right now. It was raining in San Diego and it followed me here. The last two times I've been there, it has rained. I didn't get to hit any balls on Sunday or do anything on Monday because of this nasty storm. I was bummed because I was anxious to practice. It's supposed to be yucky Tuesday, too -- plus it's cold. I did get to work with Lud on Friday and Saturday. They were good sessions; I got two thumbs up from him. He says I should just keep doing what I've been doing. We worked on my putting since that part of my game was giving me a little trouble. We worked on the alignment of my shoulders. They were a little closed. We also focused on keeping my body and head still through the stroke. You have to make a conscious effort to focus on putting. I think we sometimes take putting for granted: people focus on their swing so much. With putting, sometimes you have to go back to the basics and work on a key thought. When you start seeing the ball come off the right way, it builds confidence. Before I left Florida we did more house hunting. Working out and house hunting, that's all I do! The big news is we sold our house in Tampa. We close on the house on March 24. I don't get back to Florida until the 27th, so we'll already be gone. I had to tell Matt certain things I wanted him to take for me -- my clothes, jewelry and some pictures -- instead of leaving them for the movers. We have to put everything in storage since we still don't have our own place in West Palm. It will all work out. I'm still sad about the house, I had sort of wanted to keep it a little longer. From a money standpoint, though, it's good. It's not like anyone would have been living there, so it will be nice not having the overhead. This week I'm playing in the shoot-out on Tuesday. It's my first one of the year. I don't even know who my partner is yet. There will be six two-person teams. It's an elimination format. There are only five holes. Everyone starts out together on the first hole. Each member of the team hits a drive and then you pick the best ball. Then you alternate shots from there until you finish off the hole. The losing team is eliminated, and then the five remaining teams go on to the next hole, and so on. On each hole, a tie is decided by a chip-off. The official picks a spot to chip from, and whoever gets closest to the hole wins. I just really hope we don't get eliminated after only one hole! That has happened to me before. Tuesday night there will be a pro-am party at the host hotel, the Doubletree. We're required to go to a few each year and I'm looking forward to this one. It's a game night. There will be ping pong, pool, air hockey, stuff like that. I like everything but the shooting basketballs thing. I'm not very good at that. It's casual. A lot of the girls go. There isn't another pro-am party like this one. Then Wednesday is the actual pro-am. My mom's coming in on Wednesday night or Thursday morning, depending on my tee time. And my in-laws are coming in from Phoenix. I'll have a nice cheering section. I have good memories here. I won my first college tournament at the course we're playing, Randolph North, when I was a sophomore. I'm really itching to play, to get back into the swing of things on the road. I can't remember being this excited to play again. I just want to pick up where I left off. -- Leta
