Back in the Corning Classic Posted: Wednesday May 24, 2000 10:41 AM
Leta Lindley, 27, is in her sixth season on the LPGA Tour. She had her best year in 1999 with a tie for second, as well as four other top 10 finishes. In 1997, she finished second at the LPGA Championship, losing to Chris Johnson on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff. She was a four-time All-American at the University of Arizona and set an NCAA record for lowest 54-hole score (nine under par). Check out Lindley's diary each Wednesday on CNNSI.com.
May 23, 2000 Monday was a bad day. They canceled my connection into Rochester (I was flying from West Palm Beach), so I had to fly into Buffalo, which is an extra two hours away. Then my luggage didn't make it -- it's wandering around somewhere. It always makes me nervous when I lose my golf clubs. I'm not sure what I'll do if they don't get here -- I'll probably yell at someone, then I guess I'll try to resolve the problem. I tried to explain to the airline why it was important for me to get my bag, but I'm just not sure the message got through. On top of that, the rental car place didn't have a car for me, so I had to rent a truck for the three-hour drive. This kind of stuff happens. It's not fun, but hopefully it will turn out fine.
My neck is okay. I still have a knot where it runs down to my back, near my shoulder blade. I got a massage and I tried to get it popped back into place. But I do have full range of motion, which is good. I practiced a little bit this past week and I went to the beach twice. It was the first time I'd been to the beach since living in Florida these past two and half years. Can you believe that?! Matt and I both have sunburns, so I'm calling him Larry the Lobster. The water was really warm and there were a lot of seashells. I really enjoyed it. I'm getting closer to where I want to be with my swing. I just keep working to get the golf ball to go where I want it to go. It's a feel thing. You just know when it's right. For the first time in awhile, I hit some balls where I could tell it was better. Sometimes it even felt perfect. My misses are better now, which is what you want. Golf is a game of misses. It's very difficult to explain what's making my swing better. I had managed to get the club on an inside plane and now I'm working on getting my right elbow in the right position at the top of my swing. I worked a little on my chipping and putting, but I worked mainly on my long game. I try to make my weeks off be about relaxing, so I did a lot of that, too. That and get my life organized. This week I'm playing in the Corning Classic. This is my first time back in three years. I guess you could say I'm making a reappearance. It's a fun tournament. Corning is a small town and we get a big turnout. The course is a little shorter than some others we play and it's really tight. I like that. It puts a premium on good shots. Good shots are rewarded and bad shots are punished. Matt's not working this summer, since all of his clients are gone (West Palm really clears out in the spring and summer), so he's coming out on the road with me for the next few weeks. He's just going to be out here as a supportive husband, not as my caddie. It's really nice to have him out here. It's great to have another set of eyes. The tournament starts on Thursday. Right now I'm just hoping for my luggage turns up. Then I'll worry about golf. -- Leta
