Relaxed and refreshed
Leta Lindley, 28, is in her sixth season on the LPGA Tour. She had her best year in 1999 with a tie for second, as well as four other top 10 finishes. In 1997, she finished second at the LPGA Championship, losing to Chris Johnson on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff. She was a four-time All-American at the University of Arizona and set an NCAA record for lowest 54-hole score (nine under par). Check out Lindley's diary each Wednesday on CNNSI.com. August 23, 2000 San Diego, Calif. I did absolutely nothing this week and enjoyed every minute of it! I took two naps and read two books. I didn't even hold a club in my hands, which was a long, overdue break. I worked out three times at Innova (Innova Health and Fitness, the club I go to); I hadn't done that in about three months. I was worried I had lost some of my strength, but I was pleased with how I did. I'm really sore, but it's nice to be pushed.
Matt and I watched movies on TV: The Green Mile, which was really good, and Bicentennial Man, which was sad -- not what I expected from a Robin Williams movie. I went out and saw the house we're building. It has a slab, walls, roof and windows, so that was pretty exciting. I think they're supposed to hang dry wall this week. Originally, it was supposed to be finished by November, but they are saying they are a little behind. I guess that's the norm with in the construction business, but it's a little upsetting. They want their money on time, but they don't want to do the job on time. Hmmmm. I watched the scores of the Women's British Open and checked out how people finished. It's always hard to take a week off, it's hard to know people are passing you on the money list, but I knew my game wasn't in any shape to play. I knew I needed to take a step back. Rest is good. The hope is you'll come back and play better because of it. And I do feel rested (hopefully I'll feel the same way after this week working with Lud). I never take naps and the fact that I took two really shows how tired I was. Plus, I fell asleep on the couch watching golf, and I normally can never fall asleep unless it's completely quiet. That's tired! So, now I'm in San Diego to work with Lud for the week. Matt and I got here on Monday. We're staying at an apartment that Lud has on the beach. It's so neat. It makes being here so much more relaxing and peaceful. Hopefully I'll be able to stay focused and calm while I work my butt off. That's the plan. I had my first session with Lud on Tuesday. He is the king of positive. He always says, "You are doing so many good things, you are so close." My response was, "I don't feel close." He said, "Have faith." I'm glad Matt's here to weigh in. I didn't bring him all the way out here to not say anything. It's not like he and Lud will butt heads or anything. It's a collaborative effort. It's important for Matt to be here since he's my eyes when I'm on the road. We need to be on the same page. So what lies ahead this week? Morning walks on the beach, some more relaxation and golf. I'm glad to be here. I'm trying to keep a positive attitude. I'm anxious to pick up clubs, but part of me is dreading it a little. I want it to go well, but I know it will be hard, especially in the beginning. I'll do two-a- days with Lud, at least at the start because I don't want to run out of time and still have things I need to work on. Then it's off to Illinois for next week's tournament. I guess all I can say is I hope I come away feeling better about my game. -- Leta
