EVIAN, France, (AP) -- Karrie Webb took last week off, a much-deserved break after winning her second straight U.S. Open.

"I did a lot of relaxing and a little fishing," Webb said Tuesday ahead of this week's $2.1 million Evian Masters, a tournament co-sanctioned by the LPGA and Evian European Tours.

The U.S. Open, which Webb won by eight shots, was her first title of the year and her fourth career major.

"I'll just get on a tear like that sometimes," Webb said. "Last year, I won the Nabisco by 10 shots. You could say that up to the Open it wasn't a typical Karrie Webb year."

She won seven tournaments last year and six in 1999.

Defending Evian champion Annika Sorenstam has dominated 2001, winning five events, including one major.

With the competition in mind, Webb has started working out.

"I've only been working out regularly for the last six months or so," she said. "It's a great way to pound out your aggression -- on the treadmill. Before, it was hard. I thought I could get away with it when I was younger."

Last year in Evian, Webb birdied the final hole to force a playoff with Sorenstam. She birdied that hole again at the first playoff hole, but it wasn't enough. Sorenstam hit a 7-iron to 10 feet and made the left-to-right putt for eagle to win.

"There's not much you can do about that. I was disappointed but I played my best," Webb said.

While Webb relaxed last week, Sorenstam didn't.

"I wasn't really free," the Swede said. "I went over to London and played Sunningdale. I won't have time for a practice round the week of the British Open."

Sorenstam thinks the par-72, 6,085-yard course here plays to her strengths.

"You really need distance control here. The course is so up-and-down. Especially the par-3s," she said. "You need to know your irons, and I think that's been my strength."

Out of the current top 10 on the U.S. money list, only Dottie Pepper -- nursing a back injury -- will miss the Evian Masters.
