NEWCASTLE, Northern Ireland (Reuters) -- Jack Nicklaus heads into Sunday's final round of the British Senior Open just three strokes off the lead after shooting a 2-under-par 70 on Saturday.

Nicklaus, 61, who is playing the tournament for the first time, could have been even closer to leader Ian Stanley of Australia if he hadn't dropped a shot at the 17th and missed a birdie on the last.

"That finish hurt," he said. "I was in a position to get close to the lead in the golf tournament but then dropped what I consider to be two shots over the last two holes.

"But overall I played a pretty good round of golf. I hit a couple of loose shots but for the most part played pretty well. I look forward to being in contention tomorrow," he added.

If Nicklaus does add the title to the 18 majors he won on the regular tour, it would be his first title on British soil since the 1978 Open at St. Andrews.

Meanwhile, Stanley, who also shot a 70 to go into the final round with a 4-under-par 209, will be watching New Zealand's Bob Charles and America's David Oakley, who are one shot back.

England's John Morgan and Scotland's Russell Weir are one shot further adrift on 211.

Stanley, 52, who also won the De Vere PGA Seniors Championship, said if he won on Sunday he would surpass his goals for the season.

"At the start of the season I set myself the target of winning either the PGA Seniors or this tournament," he said. "I have already done the first bit so this would be a bit of a bonus.

"But theres still a long way to go. This is a tough golf course and anything can happen over the closing 18 holes."

Former American Walker Cup player John Grace had the best round of the day with a 4-under-par 67 to move up to 12th place.

"That's the best round I've had in quite a while," he said. "This kind of golf favors me. You have to keep it straight. You've got to pitch and putt well and those tend to be my strengths."
