Soggy start Rain washes out first day of Wales OpenNEWPORT, Wales (AP) -- Rain washed out the first round of the Wales Open on Thursday, but organizers hope to complete the tournament on time by playing two rounds Sunday. The undulating Wentworth Hills course at Celtic Manor was saturated by rain Thursday morning after 30 minutes of play. Six players completed the first hole. Officials hoped to resume by early afternoon but the rain that swept across southern Wales did not stop and play was called off. The first round will resume Friday, with the second round Saturday. The last two rounds are scheduled for Sunday. The weather forecast for the next few days is favorable. This tournament is important for several players hoping to improve their position in qualifying for the European team for next month's Ryder Cup at The Belfry. Among them is Welshman Ian Woosnam, who is 16th on the list. The top 10 will qualify early next month. Woosnam this week is using a new caddie - friend and trainer Nick Hooper. Woosnam fired Miles Byrne after he failed to count his clubs before the final round of the British Open and arrived late for the final round of the Scandinavian Masters.
