Standing Pat Perez maintains lead; Tryon still in the mixPosted: Saturday December 01, 2001 4:30 PM
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- Pat Perez took another step toward earning his card Saturday with a 2-under-par 70 that kept him in the lead with two rounds to go in the PGA Tour qualifying tournament. Perez was at 20-under 268 and led by one stroke over Shaun Micheel, who had a 67 at Bear Lakes Country Club.
Ty Tryon had a 68, his best round of the tournament. That moved the 17-year-old up to a tie for 42nd and on the cusp of becoming the youngest player to ever earn his card. After the final round Monday, the top 35 and ties will get full exempt status on the PGA Tour next year. A couple of past PGA Tour winners were in good shape to get back to the big leagues. Among them was Robert Gamez, who won twice in 1990 when he was rookie of the year. Gamez was tied for fourth after a 66 put him at 271, along with Tommy Armour III. Gary Nicklaus had a 69 and was at 273, tied for 13th.
Aaron Baddeley of Australia, the 20-year-old who won the
Austalian Open in consecutive years, has slowly made up ground the
past two days with rounds of 69-68. He was at 282, in a tie for
77th.
