CARNOUSTIE, Scotland (AP) -- Former U.S. Open champion and Ryder Cup captain Tom Kite has pulled out of next week's British Open at Carnoustie.

Kite, who will miss the tournament for the first time since 1981, sent a message to organizers Wednesday that he was withdrawing because of recent poor form.

Kite was captain of the Ryder Cup team which lost to the Europeans at Valerrama in Spain two years ago.

Kite, the 1992 U.S. Open champion, has never won the British Open. His best finish was in 1978, when he tied for second behind Jack Nicklaus at St. Andrews. He finished 10th at Royal Troon two years ago.

Nicklaus' son, Gary, withdrew from this weekend's final qualifying tournament, as did Sweden's Peter Hedblom.
