CARNOUSTIE, Scotland (AP) -- Ryder Cup player Scott Hoch on Saturday became the eighth high-profile American to withdraw from the British Open starting at Carnoustie on Thursday.

The 43-year-old, who played in the U.S. Ryder Cup team which lost at Valderrama two years, notified Open organizers of his decision but didn't give a reason.

On Friday, 1992 Masters champion Fred Couples and 1996 U.S. Open champion Steve Jones also withdrew from the Open.

John Daly, the 1995 British Open champion, pulled out after finishing next-to-last at the Irish Open last weekend and returning to the United States.

Jack Nicklaus, Brad Faxon, Tom Kite and U.S. Ryder Cup captain Ben Crenshaw have also pulled out.
