Izawa wins Aiful Cup Toshimitsu fires 5-under 67 for one-stroke victoryPosted: Sunday July 25, 1999 12:23 PM
AJIGASAWA, Japan (AP) -- Toshimitsu Izawa shot a 5-under-par 67 on Sunday for a one-stroke triumph in the 90 million yen ($750,000) Aiful Cup, proving once again that his victory in the 1995 Japan Open wasn't a fluke. Izawa, teeing off one shot off the pace, made an eagle-par-birdie start and added two more birdies in a bogey-fre round over the 7,103-yard (6,464-meter), par-72 Ajigasawa Kogen Golf Course. He finished at 14-under 274 total to earn his third title in 10 years as a pro. After the Japan Open championship, Izawa needed three years to win his second career victory in the Tokai Classic last October. "I was lucky," Izawa said of holing from the edge of the green at the par-5 first hole. "And I think I won because I was able to save par on the final two holes' following shaky iron shots." The victory was worth 18 million yen ($150,000). Toru Taniguchi, one of three leaders overnight, went around in 69 and finished second at 13-under 275. Defending champion Hidemichi Tanaka shot a 70 to share third at 277 with Katsunori Kuwabara, another overnight co-leader. Kuwabara had a 71. American Todd Hamilton, a third co-leader overnight, had an up-and-down round of six birdies, two bogeys, one double-bogey and one triple-bogey for a 73 and a share of fifth at 9-under 279 with Gohei Sato, who had a 72.
