Paul Lawrie I love America: Paul Lawrie made a name for himself with his miraculous win at the British Open. Paul Severn/Allsport

LONDON (AP) -- Surprise winner of the British Open, Paul Lawrie has decided to join the U.S. Tour next year.

"The decision has taken some time but at this stage of my career I feel that it is something I would like to do," the 30-year-old Scot said on Wednesday.

"I intend to play the bulk of my schedule on the U.S. Tour for the foreseeable future whilst also maintaining a significant schedule on the European Tour which will enable me to retain my European Tour card."

Lawrie, a comparative unknown outside the European Tour, made up 10 strokes in the final round on long time leader Jean Van de Velde of France at Carnoustie in July to win the British Open title after a three-way playoff.

In an amazing finish, the Frenchman lost a three-stroke lead when he triple bogeyed the last and Lawrie birdied the last two of the four extra holes to beat Van de Velde and American player Justin Leonard in the playoff.

A pro since 1986, Lawrie now goes to Hawaii next week for the Grand Slam of Golf, which brings together the winners of the four majors.

Davis Love III takes the place of U.S. Open titlist Payne Stewart who died in a plane crash last month.
