Cool summer World and Olympic champions highlight Goodwill figure skatingPosted: Saturday July 18, 1998 08:55 PM
NEW YORK (CNN/SI) -- Figure skating makes a rare summer appearance at the Goodwill Games in the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Headlining the ladies competition is 1998 world champion and Olympic silver medalist Michelle Kwan. Beaten by Tara Lipinski at the Nagano Games, Kwan rebounded to win the gold at the Lipinski-less world championships. She was the first woman to receive a 6.0 in the short program at the world championships since 1989. The silver medalist at this year's world championships, Irina Slutskaya of Russia also compete. Another top name and crowd favorite will be Nicole Bobek of the U.S. Once seen as part of a possible Olympic 1-2-3 sweep for the American women in Nagano, Bobek tumbled and skidded to 17th place. A rematch of the 1998 world championships is at hand in the men's competition. In the long program Todd Eldredge of the United States nailed seven triple jumps, three in combination and swept the judging panel. But he had already flubbed his short program and blew his chance for a second world title, finishing fourth. The title went to Russia's Alexei Yagudin who, despite an unimpressive performance, became the second-youngest men's world champ. The pairs competition pits Olympic champions Artur Dmitriev and Oksana Kazakova against compatriots and 1998 world champions Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze of Russia. In ice dance, Russia's Anjelika Krylova and Oleg Ovsiannikov the 1998 world champions will headline the program.
