At 32, Wilson is the oldest member of the U.S. team (TBS)

Leading the 24-man U.S. team headed to the Goodwill Games are veteran boxers lightweight Darnell Wilson and heavyweight DaVarryl Williamson.

Wilson and Williamson were Olympic alternates in 1996 and will be called upon to lead a very young U.S. squad.

They will face boxers from more than 20 countries, including: Cuba, Russia, Germany and Ireland

Wilson, 32, is the oldest member of the U.S. team, but winning his second straight U.S. Championship and his victory at the U.S. Challenge has set him up as a potential medal winner in New York.

Wilson has been ranked as high as fifth in the world this year and is currently ninth at 156 pounds.

Earlier this year, Williamson became the first heavyweight in the history of USA Boxing to win three straight national titles.

The 29-year-old recently received his master’s degree in administrative services from Northern Michigan University.

He was ranked as high as sixth in the world in the heavyweight division in 1997.

Perhaps the most likely to medal in New York will be two of the younger boxers on the squad, welterweight Larry Mosley and light heavyweight Ricardo Williams Jr.

Mosley, 18, is the 1998 U.S. champion and arguably the best amateur boxer in the U.S.

Williams, 17, became one of the youngest U.S. champions ever this past year. He also won the 1998 National Golden Gloves in Biloxi, Mississippi.

Twelve weight classes will be contested in the head-to-head, single elimination tournament to be held at The Theater at Madison Square Garden
