Bobek withdraws from Games Posted: Friday July 24, 1998 06:50 PM
NEW YORK (AP) - Nicole Bobek, a former U.S. figure skating champion and a member of last winter's Olympic team, withdrew from the Goodwill Games Friday. A statement from the organizers said Bobek pulled out of the competition because of fatigue, a chronic injury that also hampered her at the Olympics and her recent decision to rejoin coach Richard Callaghan. "I don't feel ready for this competition and want to start off the season when I am at my best," Bobek said. The statement said Bobek would return to competition at Skate America in September. Bobek hurt a hip flexor muscle before the Olympics in Nagano, Japan, and had a disastrous Winter Games, finishing 17th. She then pulled out of the world championships in Minneapolis last March, blaming the lingering effects of the injury.
